January 14, 2024 | Women's Basketball
West Point, NY – The Army West Point women's basketball team (4-10, 1-3 PL) fell to the American Eagles (6-9, 4-0 PL) in a six-point loss 75-69 Sunday afternoon. Fiona Hastick led the team in scoring with 18 pts on 50% shooting from the field, that's the most points off the bench this season by any freshman. Freshman Kya Smith scored 14 points, her fourth straight game, nine out of 14 total this season scoring in double-digits. Senior captain Lauren Lithgow rounded out the top scorers with 12 as she shot 42% from three-point range.
How it Happened
The Eagles put up a 7-2 run to open up the first quarter. Buckets from Army's Sam McNaughton and Kya Smith stopped the run. Junior Trinity Hardy cut the lead down to just one possession. American responded by putting up another run that was ended by a Fiona Hastick three-pointer, the first of the game for Army. The Black Knights headed into the second quarter trailing by seven.
Army came out in the second half stringing together several scoring possessions, including tough layups made by Kya Smith and Reese Ericson to cut the lead down to three just over halfway through the second quarter. Both teams would battle through the final five minutes and Army went into the half trailing by seven again.
Fiona Hastick and Kya Smith combined for over half of the Black Knight's third-quarter points. The Eagles outscored Army by eight to open the second half. That eight-point difference comes with six Army turnovers leading to exactly that many points for American. The Black Knights trailed by 15 heading into the fourth quarter.
Fighting through the final ten minutes, Army outscored the Eagles 24-15 as multiple Black Knights put up buckets to help cut into the lead. Kya Smith led the way in rebounds with four in the fourth quarter while Senior Lauren Lithgow drained a three and made both her free throws to lead the team in points in the final ten. Army kept fighting and was able to cut the lead down to six, but the Black Knights ran out of time and fell to the Eagles 69-75.
Next up for Army Women's Basketball is a trip up to Hamilton, NY to face Colgate on January 17th at 11:00 AM.
