Peirano Wins Vault as Gymnastics Places Third Overall in West Point Open

West Point, NY - The Army West Point Gymnastics Team hosted the 32nd annual West Point Open this past weekend. Army finished third as a team with 388.65 points. Navy took the second place spot boasting a 394.500. Springfield (381.850), William and Mary (359.350), and Temple (354.950) rounded out the finishes. Penn State was able to defend its title with a score of 401.300. Army saw multiple Black Knights qualify for the NCAA finals on Saturday.

Maddox Pabellon scored a 13.8 on the Pommel Horse which placed him in fifth and advanced him to the finals. Blaze Kennedy took the last qualifying eighth-place spot with a 13.5. Kennedy and Jaden Blank both scored a 12.75 on the still rings that tied them for the final qualifying spot. Three Black Knights qualified on the vault, Franco Peirano scored a 14.2 that tied him for third with Penn State's Matt Underhill. Jonathan Pinc tied for the fifth qualifying spot with Springfield's Dylan Colangelo scoring a 14.15. The final Army gymnast to qualify was Steve Mannolakis who placed seventh.

Parallel bars and high bars each saw two more Army qualifiers. Noah Duran and Blaze Kennedy both qualified for the finals on parallel bars placing fifth and eighth respectively. Jaden Blank placed sixth with a 12.95 on the high bars and Zachary Perez took the seventh qualifying spot scoring a 12.9.

Army saw two gymnasts finish in the top ten in the all-around scores of the finals. Blaze Kennedy finished second overall for the day with a total of 38.350 just behind Navy's Syam Buradagunta (39.500). Jaden Blank took the tenth spot scoring 24.00 even for the day. The biggest winner of the day was Franco Peirano, who became the first Army gymnast to win vault since Anthony Morales did it in 2006.

Up next for Army Gymnastics is a meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan as they travel to take on the University of Michigan on January 20th at 1:00 PM.
