Rifle Suffers First Conference Loss

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point Rifle Team suffered its first conference (Great America Rifle Conference) loss following a 4732-4690 defeat to No. 3-ranked Kentucky Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in opening the second half of its schedule.
The Black Knights (5-2, 2-1 GARC), leading in smallbore heading into the standing position, were outpointed 2348-2328 in that discipline with the Wildcats (7-1) posting a 2384-2362 decision in air rifle to claim the victory. Army's 4690 aggregate is tied for its second-highest of the season.
Sophomore Chris Jennings was runner-up in smallbore with a career-high 589, just two points off Kentucky's Sofia Ceccarello's winning mark of 591. Jennings, who fired a 586 in air rifle, placed sixth in the aggregate scoring behind a personal best 1175 as Army's top scorer.
Senior Kyle Kutz recorded a season-high 587 mark in smallbore to place fifth with Anusha Pakkam posting a 583 followed by 579s from Briggs Moore and Ashton Arlington.
Moore shattered his career mark in air rifle placing fifth with a 595, three shy of the winning mark, en route to a personal best 1174 aggregate in finishing ninth. Pakkam turned in Army's second-highest mark in air rifle with a 592 to claim the eighth spot with Arlington, a freshman, breaking into the top ten with a season-high 588.
Joining Jennings and Moore in the aggregate scoring were Pakkam, seventh (1175) and Kutz, eighth (1174).

"It's encouraging to start the spring semester with a 4690. That's what we scored in our last match of the fall so to come back after winter break and tie that says a lot about the cadets' work ethic and commitment to upping our standard", said head coach Leighton Dempster after the match.

The Black Knights are on the road next weekend visiting conference rival West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 20, followed by the University of North Georgia the next day, Sunday, Jan. 21, before returning home to close out the rest of the season with three matches along with hosting the GARC Championships.
