Army Drops Contest to Holy Cross
September 23, 2023 | Men's Soccer
West Point, NY – The Army West Point Black Knights fell to Holy Cross in their first home Patriot League matchup.
How it Happened
Army threatened early in the 5th minute with a great cross from senior captain Nick Atkinson to set the tone for the game.
Shortly after Holy Cross junior forward Evan Jones nets a goal in the 8th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Ivor Teagle.
Black Knight's keeper Harrison Faulkner came up with a big save in the 37th minute on Jonathan Klein to keep the Crusader lead to one. The sophomore was sharp to keep Army in it through all 90 minutes.
Holy Cross gets another two shots on goal, but to no avail, as Faulkner makes two more outstanding saves in the 66th and 72nd minute to keep the score 1-0.
Sophomore forward Ethan Gill netted another goal in the 80th minute for the Crusaders.
The Black Knights came close to putting a goal on the board late in the game in the 89th minute as they got a good look off a Cooper Warren free kick.
Head Coach Brian Plotkin shared his thoughts after the game: "Today wasn't indicative of who we are or what Army Soccer is. Credit to Holy Cross for playing well and getting the win. We will grow from this and we are still figuring out what the identity of the 2023 team is and I'm excited for the coming nine games with this group as we make that discovery and pursue all our goals this season."
Army will hit the road for their next match as they take on Lafayette on Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 PM.
