Women’s Tennis Starts Strong to Open the Fall Season

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. / STORRS, CONN. – The Army West Point women's tennis team opened the fall season with sending two different sets of Cadets to compete at the Vassar Fall Scramble.

Vassar Fall Scramble Day One:
Freshmen Alexandra Oshidar, Emily Ruckno, Stacey Samonte, Madison Smith, Naomi Widiaman, sophomore Vennmukiil Mathivanan, and junior Paulina Feoli kicked off the fall season at the Vassar Fall Scramble.
The Black Knights kicked off day one of the tournament facing the Vassar College Brewers. The remainder of the competition was halted early due to weather.
In singles, one match was completed. Freshman Stacey Samonte defeated Radha Raja 6-2 in the second flight.
In doubles play, Army continued to dominate the court. In the doubles second flight, freshmen Emily Ruckno and Madison Smith bested Vassar's Iris Li and Macey Dowd 6-2. In the third flight, Vennmukiil Mathivanan and Samonte defeated Ananya Krishnan and Raja 6-1.
Paulina Feoli and Naomi Widiaman bested Erin McKusker and Sofie Shen 6-0 in the first flight. Mathivanan and Alexandra Oshidar defeated Kirby and Sara Lippin 6-2 in the third flight.
Alexandra Oshidar bested Vassar's Maddie Kirby with a final score of 7-5. In the first flight for doubles, Paulina Feoli and Madison Smith defeated McKusker and Shen 6-1. In the second flight, Widiaman and Emily Ruckno competed against Vassar's Macy Dowd and Li. Widiaman and Ruckno bested Dowd and Li 6-3.
Vassar Fall Scramble Day Two:
Army worked around the weather to complete day two of the competition, holding on to momentum from day one dominating the court.
In the singles first flight, Feoli competed against NYU's Dakota Fordham, defeating Fordham 6-3. Feoli also bested Hamilton's Hannah Walpole 6-2.
Mathivanan competed in the second flight, competing against NYU's Jumena Menendez, winning by a score of 6-3. She also competed against SUNY New Paltz's Onalee Batcheller in the second flight. Mathivanan defeated Batcheller 6-0.
In the third flight, Emily Ruckno defeated NYU's Molly Herber 6-1. Ruckno also bested SUNY New Paltz's Isabel Van der Veen 6-2. She also competed against Hamilton's Kate Solowey 6-1.
In the fourth flight, Widiaman competed against Aditi Narayan, defeating Narayan 6-3. She also competed against Hamilton's Claire Cutler. Widiaman bested Cutler 6-3. She also defeated SUNY New Paltz's Tatiana Barnett 6-0.
Freshman Stacey Samonte competed in the fifth flight, competing opposite Molly Herber. Samonte bested Herber 7-5. Samonte faced off against Hamilton College's Priyanka Challapalli. She defeated Challapalli 6-1. Samonte also bested SUNY New Paltz's Loretta Donovan 6-1.
In the sixth flight, Alexandra Oshidar competed against NYU's Ksenia Goel, defeating Goel 6-4. Oshidar defeated Hamilton College's Grace Qian 6-1 and bested SUNY New Paltz's Amirah Alston 6-0.
In the first flight of the doubles matches, Army's Paulina Feoli and Naomi Widiaman defeated NYU's Dakota Fordham and Isabella Hartman 6-4. In the second flight, Madison Smith and Emily Ruckno faced off against NYU's Molly and Tess Herber, besting them 6-0. Feoli and Widiaman also competed against Hamilton College's Qian and Cutler, defeating them 6-1. Vennmukiil Mathivanan and Stacey Samonte bested NYU's Ksenia Goel and Jimena Menendez 6-1 in the third flight.
In the third flight, Mathivanan and Samonte also competed against Hamilton College's Grace Fuss and Samantha Rainero, besting them 6-1. SUNY New Paltz's Tatiana Barnett and Nina Gezone faced off against Army's Vennmukiil Mathivanan and Stacey Samonte. Mathivanan and Samonte also defeated Barnett and Gezone 6-0.
Vassar Fall Scramble Day Three:
On the final day of the tournament, Army hosted the Fall Scramble at Lichtenberg Tennis Center due to weather.
In singles, junior Paulina Feoli competed against Vassar's Macey Dowd in the first flight. Feoli defeated Dowd 6-2. Also in the first flight, Mathivanan faced off against NYU's Dakota Fordham, besting Fordham 6-0.
In the second flight, Mathivanan defeated Vassar's Erin McCusker 6-2. Feoli competed against NYU's Jimena Menendez. Feoli bested Menendez 6-2.
In the third flight, Emily Ruckno faced off against Vassar's Radha Raja. Ruckno defeated Raja 6-1. Naomi Widiaman also competed against NYU's Isabella Hartman. Widiaman bested Hartman with a score of 6-1.
In the fourth flight, Widiaman defeated Vassar's Maya Thompson 6-0. Ruckno also competed against NYU's Aditi Narayan, besting Narayan 6-3.
Stacey Samonte competed against Vassar's Brooke Berbeco in the fifth flight. Samonte defeated Berbeco 6-3. Samonte also bested NYU's Ksenia Goel 6-3. Oshidar defeated Vassar's Sara Lippin 6-1 in the sixth flight. She also faced off against NYU's Tess Herber. Oshidar bested Herber 6-1.
In the first flight of doubles, Feoli and Ruckno competed against Vassar's Iris Li and Macey Dowd. Feoli and Ruckno defeated Li and Dowd 6-0. They also faced off against Hamilton College's Hannah Walpole and Priyanka Challapalli. Feoli and Ruckno bested Walpole and Challapalli 6-1.
Madison Smith and Naomi Widiaman competed against Vassar's Sofie Shen and Erin McCusker in the second flight. Smith and Widiaman bested Shen and McCusker 6-3. Smith and Samonte competed against Grace Qian and Claire Cutler. They defeated Qian and Cutler 6-2. In the third flight, Alexandra Oshidar and Vennmukiil Mathivanan defeated Vassar's Maddie Kirby and Iris Li 7-6). They also bested Vassar's Iris Lee and Macey Dowd 6-1.
Quinnipiac Invite Day One:
Army's Julia Kelly, Jenna Sabile, Cooper Jackson, Paige Herremans, Carolyn Ahn, Emma Sy, and Isabella Brilliant represented the Black Knights in the Quinnipiac Invite. Army competed opposite Quinnipiac in doubles on the first day of the tournament.
In the No. 1 spot, Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans competed against Jenna Sloan and Caitlin Flower. Jackson and Herremans defeated Sloan and Flower 6-3. In the second position, Julia Kelly and Jenna Sabile bested Quinnipiac's Jordan Bradley and Nikole Lisovyy 6-1.
Senior Carolyn Ahn and sophomore Isabella Brilliant competed against Caroline Schulson and Dominique Yeo in the No. 3 spot. Ahn and Brilliant defeated Schulson and Yeo in a 7-5 match. Army's Ylan Duong and Emma Sy bested Anagha Shankar and Ella Lewis 7-5.
Quinnipiac Invite Day Two:
On the second day of competition, the Black Knights competed against Connecticut.
In doubles play, Julia Kelly and Jenna Sabile competed against Isabella Asenov and Nansi Toskova. Kelly and Sabile defeated Asenov and Toskova 6-3.
In singles, Emma Sy defeated Connecticut's Aleksandra Karamyshev in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 10-4). Sophomore Ylan Duong bested Caroline Hinshaw 6-2, 6-4. Emma Sy faced off against Cameron Didion. Sy defeated Didion in two sets (6-1, 6-3). Junior Julia Kelly bested Connecticut's Isabella Asenov 6-3, 6-0.
Quinnipiac Invite Day Three:
On the final day of the Quinnipiac Invite, Army competed against the Fairfield Stags.
In doubles, Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans competed against Fairfiel's Laina Campos and Sarah Liu in the first spot. Jackson and Herremans defeated Campos and Liu 6-2. Julia Kelly and Jenna Sabile bested Scarlett Hutchinson and Francesca Karman 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. In the third spot, Army's Carolyn Ahn and Isabella Brilliant defeated Maeve Cassidy and Lily Malinowski 6-2.
In the first position, Cooper Jackson bested Sarah Liu in two sets (6-1, 7-5). Junior Jenna Sabile competed against Francesca Karmen in the second spot. Sabile defeated Karmen 6-2, 6-1.
In the No. 3 spot, Army's Emma Sy faced off against Scarlett Hutchinson. Sy bested Hutchinson in two sets (6-1, 7-5). Junior Julia Kelly competed against Laina Campos in the fourth position. Kelly defeated Campos 6-0, 6-4. In the No. 5 spot, Ylan Duong bested Lucie Tuttle in a tiebreaker set (1-6, 6-1, 1-0).
In the sixth position, junior Paige Herremans defeated Maeve Cassidy 6-2, 6-3. Carolyn Ahn faced off against Fairfield's Lily Malinowski in the seventh spot. Ahn bested Malinowski in two sets (6-2, 6-1). In the No. 8 spot, sophomore Isabella Brilliant defeated Meg Harding 6-3, 6-0.
