Coach's Corner
"We had hoped to finish on the podium today but came up just a little bit short of that goal. For most of the day I really thought we could get there but we just didn't have enough firepower at the tail end of the meet. We did win a few more titles and it's safe today that we dominated the throws. We won all of the throwing events at this championship and a different woman won each of them. Aysia Salas got everything started by winning the shot put. She is no stranger to big wins but this one is probably the sweetest one yet. Aysia has struggled with some wrist pain for much of the outdoor season. Early in the week we were not even certain that she could throw at this meet. But then she lined up that first attempt and the event was over. t was a great win by a great competitor. In the discus later in the day, it was Sophia Dykstra winning the title and setting a new academy record in the process. Sophia has flirted with the 50 meter mark all season throwing just near it or just over it on a number of occasions. But today she changed all of that when she launched the winning throw in round 5. Her winning mark of 50.89 took down a record that had stood since 2012. It was a fantastic performance. Our lone championship on the track today came from Saydee Aganus in the hurdles. It was her first Patriot League title and one of the best races she has ever run. She had a strong start that got her into 2nd place early in the race and by hurdle 3 she had pulled even with the leader. She opened a narrow lead midway through the race and held that gap as she crossed the finish line. She has had her sights set on running fast and winning championship races this spring and today she was rewarded with both. The wins today were the big highlights but outside of the wins maybe the biggest bright spot was the number of underclassmen on our team that scored points for the team. We return all but 3.5 of our 143 points next year. The future is bright." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
