May 07, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY – No. 15 Army West Point women's lacrosse sees its season march on after earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
It marks the first ever NCAA appearance for the Black Knights in program history, after finishing runner-up in the Patriot League for the first time ever. Army will take on seventh-seeded James Madison on Friday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. from Harrisonburg, VA. The winner will advance to take on the victor of Maryland vs. Drexel.
Army has made history throughout the 2023 season, reaching the Patriot League Championship game for the first time while remaining in the national rankings throughout the majority of the season. Army saw its first-ever win over a top-ten opponent early in the season against Rutgers, while also taking down a top-twenty opponent in fellow NCAA Tournament attendee Jacksonville. Head coach Michelle Tumolo was named Patriot League Coach of the Year following the season.
The Black Knights were led by four All-Patriot League first team selections, including the Patriot League Rookie of the Year Brigid Duffy. Duffy broke the single-season program record for points in the Patriot League Championship, having amassed 79 points this season. Kathleen Sullivan was also named first team All-Patriot League and equaled her own program record with 77 points to this point in the season. Julia Franzoni was a first team all-league attacker, and earned Patriot League All-Tournament team honors after securing 18 draw controls across both games of the tournament. Jolie Riedell was also a first team all-league selection in the midfield. Cathleen Parker (defense) and Julia Gorajek (attack) were named to the All-Patriot League second team.
Army comes into the contest with a 15-3 overall record, as James Madison sits at 17-2 on the season. The Dukes fell to Florida in the AAC Championship game. This marks the first meeting between the two programs.
The Black Knights first round game can be streamed on ESPN+ on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
