Julia Riekena and Kaylee Cargile Nominated for MA Sorensen Award
April 04, 2023 | Women's Rugby
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point women's rugby captains Julia Riekena and Kaylee Cargile have each been nominated for the MA Sorensen Award, an annual honor given to the top collegiate women's rugby player in the country.
The award is named after World Cup-winning Eagle MA Sorensen, a player, coach and doctor who served as a trailblazer for future generations of women's rugby players. Nominees are voted on with the help of the collegiate rugby community to be selected as finalists. The finalist group will consist of four to five players who will attend the awards ceremony in Seattle, Wash. in June. The awards panel will vote on the winner, including MA Sorensen herself, before the event and announce it at the ceremony.Â
Riekena is coming off a 15s season in which she was named to the All-NIRA First Team. Recognized as the top No. 8 in NIRA, the Missoula, Montana native helped Army to a 6-1 record in the regular season while scoring three tries.
Cargile also logged three tries while leading Army's front row as she was named All-NIRA honorable mention following the season.
The nominees will be narrowed down to 4-5 finalists in the coming weeks. Votes can be placed HERE to help advance select nominees.
