Baseball Falls to Columbia

WEST POINT, N.Y.– The Army West Point baseball team (28-13, 16-2 PL) fell to the Columbia University Lions (23-13, 11-4, Ivy) 11-7 Tuesday night. Army's Kevin Dubrule batted 2-4, with a home run, three RBIs, and a run.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first inning, the Black Knights struck first, attacking Columbia starter Thomas Santana (No Decision). Junior Braden Golinski hit a leadoff home run, giving Army a 1-0 lead. The Lions ended the inning with a popup, a fly-out, and a strikeout.
In the top of the third, Columbia attacked Army starter Dom Trippi (No Decision). Leadoff hitter Mike Decker walked, putting a runner on first. With one out, Sam Miller hit a single up the middle, Decker advanced to second. With two outs, Andy Blake ripped a double down the left field line, sending Decker in to score, making it a 1-1 game, Miller was tagged out at home, ending the inning.
The bats came alive for the Black Knights in the bottom of the third. Leadoff hitter Chris Barr walked, putting a runner on first. Junior Derek Berg hit a single to shortstop Andy Blake, putting runners on first and second. Sam Ruta flied out to center field advancing runners to second and third. Kevin Dubrule blasted a three-run home run to left field, giving Army a 4-1 lead. Senior Ross Friedrick gave the Black Knights a 5-1 lead after hitting a solo home run to right field. Coleson Titus hit a single to left center with one out, putting a runner on first. Titus advanced to second on a passed ball, putting a runner in scoring position. Columbia ended the inning with a groundout.
Bryce Brownlee came in to pitch relief for Dom Trippi.
The Lions began their comeback in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Weston Eberly was hit by a pitch, putting a runner on base. Cole Hage hit a single to left field, putting runners on first and second. With one out, Columbia loaded the bases after Decker walked. Skye Selinsky walked, and Decker and Hage advanced to second and third. Eberly came in to score, making it a 5-2 game. The Lions tied the ball game up, after Sam Miller ripped a double to left center, sending Selinsky, Decker, and Hage across the plate, making it a 5-5 game. The Black Knights retired the side with a fly-out.
Jafar Vohra (W, 1-0) came in to pitch relief for Thomas Santana.
Army threatened Vohra in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Chris Barr hit a bunt to third base, putting a runner on first. With two outs, Barr advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, putting a runner in scoring position. The Lions ended the inning with a strikeout.
Relief pitcher Will Hart came in to pitch relief for Bryce Brownlee.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Weston Eberly hit a solo home run, giving the Lions a 6-5 lead. Cole Hage and Anton Lazits were both walked, putting runners on first and second. Lazits and Hage stole second and third, Hage came in to score on an error by Titus, giving Columbia a 7-5 lead. Hart cleared the side with a strikeout.
Army got out in order in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out, Miller hit a double to right center, putting a runner in scoring position. Griffin Palfrey ripped a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Blake reached on a fielder's choice, Chris Barr tagged Palfrey out at second, and Miller came in to score, making it an 8-5 game. Army retired the side with a fly-out.
Derek Yoo came into the game to pitch relief for Vohra in the bottom of the sixth. Addison Ainsworth hit a single to right field with one out, putting a runner on first. Freshman Ethan Ellis reached first on a fielder's choice; Ainsworth was tagged out by Blake. Columbia ended the inning with a groundout.
Army's Trevor Finan came into the game for Will Hart in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Lazits walked, putting a runner on first. Finan retired the side with a strikeout.
Columbia's Camron Hubble came into the game for Derek Yoo in the top of the seventh inning.
The Black Knights threatened Hubble. Derek Berg hit a leadoff single to third base, putting a runner on first. With one out, Berg advanced to second on a wild pitch, putting a runner in scoring position. Berg advanced to third on a groundout. Hubble ended the inning with a fly-out.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Joe Valchar came in to pitch relief for Trevor Finan. Blake walked, putting runners on first and second. The Black Knights cleared the side with a fly-out.
Kyle Corso went to right field for Hayden Schott in the bottom of the eighth.
With one out, Titus walked, putting a runner on first. Ellis was hit by a pitch with two outs, putting runners on first and second. Bennett Smith came into the game to pinch-hit for Chris Barr. Smith fouled out.
Thomas Schreck went to second base for Bennett Smith.
In the top of the ninth, Columbia went on to put three runs on the board, making it an 11-5 game.
Justin Tucker came into the game to pitch relief for Camron Hubble.
The Black Knights began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth. Derek Berg hit a leadoff double to center field, putting a runner in scoring position. Junior Sam Ruta blasted a two-run home run to left center, making it an 11-7 game. Kevin Dubrule walked, putting a runner on first. Ross Friedrick ripped a single to center field, putting runners on first and second. The Lions nixed Army's comeback with a strikeout and a double play.
