Army Dominates Holy Cross in 22-12 Win

WEST POINT, NY – The Army West Point baseball team (25-12, 13-2 PL) defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders (11-28, 3-12 PL) 22-12 Wednesday afternoon. Army's Kevin Dubrule batted 4-4, having a home run, a double, five runs, and five RBIs.
How it Happened
In the bottom of the first, Holy Cross quickly attacked Army starter Robbie Buecker (No Decision). Leadoff hitter Jake McElroy hit a single, putting a runner on first. Designated hitter and starting pitcher Sean Scanlon (No Decision) ripped a ground-rule double to right field, putting runners on the corners. With one out Connor Cooney hit a bases-clearing single to left center, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Army retired the side with a groundout.
In the bottom of the first, the Black Knights came out attacking Holy Cross starter Sean Scanlon. Junior Derek Berg hit a leadoff single to left center, putting a runner on first. Berg advanced to second on a groundout, putting a runner in scoring position. With one out, Kevin Dubrule ripped a single through the left side, sending Berg in to score, making it a 2-1 game. Army had runners on first and second after Ross Friedrick was walked. With two outs, runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. The Black Knights loaded the bases after Ethan Ellis was walked. The Black Knights tied everything up after Justin Lehman was walked, sending Dubrule across the plate. Jake McOsker (2-2) came in to pitch relief for Sean Scanlon. The Crusaders ended the inning with a pop-up.
In the top of the second, Robbie Buecker retired the side in order.
The bats came alive for the Army in the bottom of the second. Addison Ainsworth hit a leadoff single to right field, putting a runner on first. Ainsworth advanced to second on a balk, putting a runner in scoring position. The Black Knights took a 3-2 lead, after Berg ripped an RBI double to left center, sending Ainsworth in to score. Sam Ruta walked, putting runners on first and second. Luke LeMond came in to relief for Jake McOsker. Dubrule ripped a single to shortstop, loading the bases. Ross Friedrick walked advancing the runners, sending Berg in to score, giving Army a 4-2 lead. Junior Braden Golinski hit a 2 RBI single to first, sending Friedrick to third, and sending Dubrule and Ruta in to score, making it a 6-2 game. The Black Knights had two runners in scoring position, after Golinski stole second. With two outs, Thomas Schreck hit a 2RBI single to right field, sending Golinski and Friedrick in to score, making it an 8-2 game. The Crusaders ended the inning after tagging Schreck out at second.
Chris Barr came into the game for Schreck in the top of the third. Holy Cross began its comeback attempt, with McElroy and Scanlon both reaching base on walks, putting runners on first and second. Toomey reached on a fielder's choice, McElroy advanced to third, and Scanlon was tagged out at second, leaving runners on the corners. Holy Cross made it an 8-3 game, after McElroy scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Steven Graver came in to the game to pitch relief for Robbie Buecker. With one out, Chris Baillargeon hit an RBI single to right center, sending Toomey across the plate, making it an 8-4 game. Graver retired the side with a strikeout and a groundout.
In the bottom of the third, relief pitcher Jaden Wywoda came into the game for LeMond.
Addison Ainsworth kicked things off for the Black Knights. Ainsworth hit a leadoff single, putting a runner on first. Berg followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. Third baseman Sam Ruta blasted a 3-run home run to center field, giving Army a commanding 11-4 lead. With no outs, Dubrule ripped a double to right center, putting a runner in scoring position. Friedrick hit a single to left field, sending Dubrule to third, Friedrick advanced to second on the throw. Braden Golinski hit an RBI single to second, sending Dubrule in to score, making it a 12-4 game. Army took a 13-4 lead, after Friedrick scored on an error by second baseman Oliver Brown. With the bases loaded, the Crusaders ended the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.
Holy Cross continued to fight back. CJ Egrie hit a single to left field, putting a runner on base. Egrie stole second, putting a runner in scoring position. McElroy walked, putting runners on first and second. With one out, the Crusaders had two runners in scoring position after McElroy and Egrie stole second and third. Holy Cross loaded the bases, after Toomey was hit by a pitch. Cooney was walked, sending Egrie in to score, making it a 13-5 game. Lucas Manning ripped a two-RBI single to right field, sending McElroy and Toomey across the plate, making it a 13-7 game. Army's Will Hart came in to relief for Steven Graver. Holy Cross' Will Peek came into the game to pinch-hit for Brown. Army retired the side with a strikeout and a tag at first catching Baillargeon stealing.
The Black Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Derek Berg was walked, putting a runner on first. Berg stole second, putting a runner in scoring position. On a wild pitch, Berg advanced to third. Dubrule walked, putting runners on the corners. With one out, Friedrick hit an RBI single, sending Berg across the plate, and Dubrule to second. Golinski reached on a fielder's choice, and Friedrick was tagged out at second, putting runners on the corners. Payton Sutman came into the game for Wywoda. Army further extended its lead with an RBI single by Ethan Ellis, making it a 15-7 game.
Holy Cross continued to pester the Black Knights. In the top of the fifth, Brendan Jones ripped a leadoff double down the right field line, putting a runner in scoring position. Jones advanced to third on a fly-out. The Crusaders had runners on the corners after McElroy walked. Sean Scanlon hit a double to left center, sending Jones in to score. Toomey made it a 15-9 game, after hitting a double to center field, sending McElroy across the plate. With two outs, the Black Knights cleared the side after Sam Ruta tagged Toomey out at third.
Army put their leadoff hitter on first, after Chris Barr was hit by a pitch. With one out, Barr advanced to second on a passed ball, putting a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Barr stole third. Ruta walked, putting runners on the corners. Dubrule continued to command the plate, hitting a three-run home run, giving the Army an 18-9 lead. Sutman cleared the side with a fly-out.
In the top of the sixth, with one out Brendan Jones hit a solo home run to left center, making it an 18-10 game. The Black Knights retired the side with two fly-outs.
Jake Needham came in to relief for Payton Sutman.
In the bottom of the sixth, Holy Cross ended the inning with a strikeout, a fly-out, and a pickoff at first.
Army's Tyler Prichard came in to the game for Will Hart.
In the top of the seventh, Prichard retired the side in order.
The Black Knights continued to tax the Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh.
Leadoff hitter Chris Barr reached first on an error by McElroy. Ainsworth was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Army loaded the bases after Berg walked. With one out, Kevin Dubrule hit a sacrifice fly, sending Barr in to score, making it a 19-10 game. Senior Ross Friedrick blasted a 3-run home run, giving the Black Knights a commanding 22-10 lead. Needham ended the inning after tagging Golinski out at first.
In the top of the eight with two outs, Trevor Finan came in to relief for Tyler Prichard. Finan retired the side with a strikeout.
In the top of the ninth, Jake Jaszcz came in to pinch-hit for Jones. With one out, Will Harding came in to pinch-hit for McElroy. Harding hit a single, putting a runner on first. Sean Scanlon ripped a single to right center, advancing Harding to third, and putting a runner in scoring position. Chris Benton came into the game to pinch-hit for Jack Toomey. Sean Scanlon advanced to second on a passed ball, sending Harding in to score, making it a 22-11 game. Benton hit an RBI single to left field, sending Scanlon in to score, making it a 22-12 game. Holy Cross' Jordan Petrushka came into the game to pinch-hit for Connor Cooney. Army pitcher Trevor Finan secured the win for the Black Knights with a strikeout.
