Women's Rugby Places Fifth with Plate Final Victory at Tropical 7s

TAMPA, FL - Army West Point women's rugby had a successful weekend at the Tropical 7s tournament hosted at Tampa Sportsplex this weekend, claiming the plate final championship and fifth-place overall.
Playing amongst the top teams in the country, Army went 3-3 overall in the tournament, winning its final two games after falling in the Championship quarterfinal.
Army began on Friday with its pool play slate as it featured matchups with Lindenwood (gold), Life (green) and Harvard. The Black Knights were defeated by a score of 27-5 in the first matchup against Lindenwood, with Olivia Popp scoring the lone try for Army. Bouncing back against Life, Army dominated with a 39-0 victory. Popp got on the scoresheet again with a try while Julia Riekena, Molly Murtagh and Gillian Scott also logged tries scored. Codi Butt added a try and conversion in the win while Syndey Schaaf paced the Black Knights with 11 points through a try and a trio of conversions. Schaaf continued her strong play against the Crimson, scoring the lone two tries as Army eventually fell by a score of 24-12 against Harvard.
Entering Championship Saturday as the seven seed, Army fell by a score of 22-12 against Life (black) to bow out of the Championship bracket. Moving to the plate semifinals, Army posted a 20-12 victory over LIU to advance to the Plate final. The Black Knights took home the plate championship and fifth-place overall finish, topping Lindenwood (black) by a score of 31-14 to close out the tournament with a 3-3 record overall.
Army will return on Sunday, April 23 to compete in the Quinnipiac 7s tournament.
