Army Sits Sixth After Solid Day One at the EIWA Championships

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Army West Point wrestling team concluded day one of competition seated sixth with 52.5 points at the 2022-2023 EIWA Championships. Cornell leads the way, in first place with 82.5 points. Lehigh and Penn are currently in second (68.5 pt.s) and third place (67 pts.), respectively. Junior's Nate Lukez and Ben Pasiuk advance to the semifinals round after advancing from the quarterfinals. During the championships, Army secured seven total bonus point victories (six major decisions and a fall). The Black Knights currently sit half a point from securing a top-five spot.
How it Happened
The Black Knights secured two semifinal spots with Nate Lukez and #14 (in the country) Ben Pasiuk securing a spot in their respective weight classes. In the opening day of competition, both Lukez and Pasiuk each attaining securing bonus point victories throughout the day. The Black Knights also had six Cadet-athletes reach the consolation of 4 rounds, finishing the day in the top-eight. Sixth-seeded #13 (in the country) Ethan Berginc (125 lbs.), seventh-seeded Julian Sanchez (141 lbs.), fourth-seeded Trae McDaniel (149 lbs.), seventh-seeded Dalton Harkins (165 lbs.), 13th-seeded Daniel Lawrence (197 lbs.), and 12th-seeded Austin Kohlhofer (285 lbs.) all battling in the consolation rounds.
In the in the 149-class consolation of 8 #2 round, Trae McDaniel fired up the Army crowd after defeating Navy's Kaeman Smith by a 14-4 fall (6:31).

In the 157-weight class, Nate Lukez competed against 12th-seeded Tyler Williams of Drexel in the Round of 16. Lukez bested Williams by major decision (10-2). In the quarterfinals, Lukez faced fourth-seeded Andrew Cerniglia of Navy in the quarterfinal round. Lukez defeated Cerniglia with a 7-5 decision.

In the Round of 16, in the 174- class, Junior #14 Ben Pasiuk entered the championships seeded third, facing 14th seeded Jake Logan of Lehigh. Pasiuk defeated Logan by an 8-2 decision. In the quarterfinals, Pasiuk competed against Navy's sixth-seeded Sammy Starr. Pasiuk defeated Starr with an 11-3 major decision.
