"We had light rain all day today which impacted the field events but didn't really limit the distance events in the evening. We won both the men's and women's javelin throws with modest marks that reflected the conditions. Both Chris and Nicole are seniors and I think that they handled the conditions pretty well. It was slippery on the runway, difficult to keep the javelin dry and a challenge to grip it properly. So they did well to come out on top given the circumstances. Cameron smith had a slight improvement in the hammer with his runner up performance and Kayley ragazzini opened up in the hammer and did well for her first event of the year in wet and slick conditions. She is one of our most capable and versatile throwers so it was great to see her get off to a solid start to the season. In the distance carnival in the evening the constant drizzle had little impact on the events. We had a good showing in the mens 1500 in sweeping the top 3 places. Mitchell burr picked up right where he left off indoors. He looked great coming down the home stretch in complete command. The women's 5k result proved to the best outcome of the night for us. Georgia Jones won the event with a strong finish and broke her own Academy record in the process. She had her sights set on a faster time but had to settle for the win and the 9 second improvement on the record she set as a plebe back in 2021. She did a nice job of staying patient throughout the race and easily handled all of the collegiate athletes in the race. The two unattached runners were a bit more savvy and there was some exchanging of the lead over the last two laps that left the outcome in doubt until the final 100 meters. At that point, it was down to two women and Georgia was able to shift gears and being the most speed to the line as she pulled away for the win. The weather looks good for tomorrow so sprints and other field events should be just fine as we close out the weekend." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
Army will return for day two tomorrow with events beginning 9:00 a.m. PT.
