Women's Basketball Drops Fourth Quarter, Losing To Vermont 62-42
December 07, 2023 | Women's Basketball
West Point, NY – The Army West Point women's basketball team (2-6) dropped their contest to the Vermont Catamounts (6-4) by a score of 42-62 Wednesday evening. Freshman Kya Smith led the team in scoring with 11 for her fourth game scoring double digits this season while also pulling down eight boards to make it six straight games with seven or more rebounds.
How it Happened
Army was slow coming out of the gate scoring six first-quarter points, four from senior captain Sam McNaughton while junior Trinity Hardy added a bucket. The Black Knights matched the Catamounts in defensive rebounds as each team pulled down six. Vermont would lead it 15-6 heading into the second.
The Black Knights bounced back in the second quarter shooting 54% from the field. Freshman duo Camryn Tade and Kya Smith stepped up, scoring all but two of Army's points in the second frame. Army out shot and out-rebounded Vermont, offensively and defensively. Going on a 5-0 run towards the first half's final minutes, the Black Knights would score 15 second-quarter points to the Catamounts ten and go into the half trailing the reigning America East champs by just four.
Freshman Fiona Hastick put up the first seven of Army's 16 points in the third quarter shooting 75% from the field and draining a three to make it a one-possession game. Army took care of the ball with only one turnover in the opening ten minutes of the second. However, the Catamounts responded by shooting 60% from the field and scoring four more points than the Black Knights as we headed into the final ten minutes trailing by eight.
A rough final ten minutes from Army would lead to the Catamount victory. Scoring just five points and shooting 13% from the field opened the door for an 8-0 Vermont run as they put up 17 in the last ten minutes, to win it 62-42.
Army will take 13 days with no games as their next match-up will be December 20th, at home against Binghamton at 1:00 PM.
