October 15, 2023 | Men's Rugby
Charlotte, NC - The Army West Point men's rugby team regained a winning momentum defeating Queens College 26-7 on Saturday night.
How it Happened
The 26 Army points came from three different Black Knights. Freshman center Benjamin Kemp opened the scoring with a try just over five minutes into the game. Jonny Haley added the conversion to make it 7-0.
Just under ten minutes after Army scored, The Royals would respond back with a try and conversion of their own making it 7-7, 13 minutes through the first. The game would only remain tied for a short span as Benji Kemp scored another try in the 22nd minute and Haley got the conversion to make it 14-7.
Before ending the half, Nate Gould would get a try late in the first to make it 19-7. Jonny Haley had his third conversion of the game to give Army the 21-7 lead going into the second. Gould would get the only points of the second half as he put five on the board for Army to help give them the 26-7 win over Queens.
After the win, the team shared their thoughts saying:
"I'm most proud of our team coming together, setting a simple goal, and executing it violently. Every man on this team, not just he men on the field, committed to the same goal over the last two weeks. We didn't play perfectly, but I'm very happy with how we executed the plan and trusted each other."
"We took a step forward in the areas that we wanted to improve. The brothers showed up in the right head space which allowed us to play with poise and discipline. We still have a lot to work on regarding offensive shape, handling errors, and communication, but I am excited to see how fast we can climb throughout the remainder of the fall."
- Andrew Bardak
"It was a good disciplined performance by all 23 today. During our bye week we established our need for improvement around discipline. Today we took a big step forward in that regard"
- Tiaan Mosconi
"After our last game, we had some things that we really wanted to improve on and I think we took this past week to get those things right and I think the hard work paid off tonight."
- Nate Gould
"I'm glad we were able to take a step forward and prove to ourselves that we play army rugby. I am excited to take the pitch with the brothers next week."
