WINTHROP, MASS – Army West Point hockey senior Anthony Firriolo was named Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the league. In addition, Senior Associate Athletic Trainer Rachel Leahy was honored by the league as its Player of the Week, for her heroic efforts in Army's contest with Sacred Heart this past week.
Anthony Firriolo earns his eighth weekly award across his Army career. In Army's return to Tate Rink on Sunday, Firriolo was instrumental in Army's 3-3 tie and shootout victory against No. 11 Providence, as the Black Knights erased three separate deficits to force the overtime period. The Army captain and native of Montville, N.J., logged assists on all three goals for the Black Knights in the contest. It marked the sixth multi-point game of the season for the Army blueliner. Quarterbacking Army's top power-play unit, Firriolo dished out a pair of helpers to Joey Baez on the power-play including his goal with 80 seconds remaining to force overtime. Adding an assist on Ricky Lyle's third period tally, Firriolo is up to 15 assists this season which ranks third in Atlantic Hockey.
Senior Associate Athletic Trainer Rachel Leahy, in her second season with the hockey program and fourth season at West Point, was also named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week. In Army's contest on Thursday night at Sacred Heart, Leahy's response and treatment was pivotal in a life-threatening medical emergency on the ice.
Army will remain home for an Atlantic Hockey series with Canisius this weekend at Tate Rink (Jan. 13-14).
