January 23, 2023 | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point Women's Basketball Senior Sabria Hunter was named the Patriot League GEICO Player of the Week and freshman Reese Ericson was named the Patriot League GEICO Rookie of the Week, announced today by the league
Last week (1/16-1/22), Army Women's Basketball went 2-0 with victories over Bucknell and Navy, led by big performances from Hunter and Ericson.
In the two wins, Hunter averaged 16.5 points and 15.0 rebounds on .48% shooting (13/27) from the floor.
Hunter logged a monster game in Army's 75-61 win over Navy on Saturday, recording 23 points and 17 rebounds, joining only Madison Hovren ('19) as the only Army Women's basketball players to log that stat line since 2009-10. Furthermore, she is the only Patriot League player to post 23+ points and 17+ rebounds in a game this season.
A native of Austintown, Ohio, Hunter is averaging a double-double this season, registering 13.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game while shooting .548% from the field (92-168). Her current average of 13.5 rebounds would be the best in program history for a single-season, topping Hovren's averaging of 13.1 boards in the 2018-19 campaign.
This marks Ericson's second time winning Rookie of the Week this season as she also took home the honors on January 3.
Ericson was instrumental in Army's victory over Navy as well logging a career-high 24 points on 8-15 shooting (.533%). Her 24 points ties for the most in a game by an Army freshman since 2009-10 with Kelsey Minato '16 & Kate Murray '22 who also accomplished the feat of scoring 24 points. The 24 points also marks the most in a game by a freshman in the Patriot League this season.
Earlier this month, she logged a career high 10 assists in a win at American on January 11.
A native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Ericson is averaging 8.9 points, shooting .413 from the field (57-138) and .344% from three-point (22-64) and is also averaging 3.2 assists per game.
