WEST POINT, N.Y. – A young Army West Point gymnastics team set season highs, both team and
individually, in a challenging field during the opening night of the annual West Point Open Friday
evening at Christl Arena with plebe Maddox Pabellon and sophomore Joseph Buselmeier setting the
pace.
Pabellon, competing in his first home meet, set a season high of 13.85 on pommel horse to rank second
in a field dominated by champion Penn State and runner-up Nebraska. Buselmeier was third in the all-
around competition, earning a spot on the podium, behind his season best 77.95.
Army set season highs in five of the six team events, just missing in another, with marks of 65.85 on
floor exercise, 64.0 on pommel horse, 69.6 on vault, 65.1, parallel bars, and 63.0 on high bar.
Jackson Pophal, one of six Black Knights to qualify for Saturday's individual finals, also met the standard on
parallel bars where he set a season best 13.65 in tying Penn State's Ian Raubal for fifth place.
Senior Jacob Nauman and freshman Blaze Kennedy also qualified on two events in making the top-eight
list. Nauman set season highs to advance on vault and floor exercise, tying for fifth (14.35) in the former
and placing seventh in the latter (13.75).
Kennedy was just as impressive, placing fifth on pommel horse behind a season high 13.5 as Army sends
two into that event in joining classmate Pabellon. Kennedy also made the cut on parallel bars tying for
the final eighth spot with another season best (13.5) where he will be joined by junior Jackson Pophal
who tied for fifth (13.65) just one-tenth off fourth place with his season high.
Sophomore Zachary Perez and Buselmeier both qualified on high bar with season highs in rounding out
Army's contingent on Saturday. Perez posted a 13.15 for fifth place and Buselmeier, who tied for sixth
(13.1), just missed the cut on still rings (13.35).
The Nittany Lions defended their title posting a 407.6 in nipping the Cornhuskers' 399.3 mark. Navy was
third (394.5) followed by the Black Knights (390.15) and Springfield (388.15).
