WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point men's soccer picked up its first victory of the season over Florida Atlantic University on Wednesday night at Malek Stadium. The Black Knights used a pair of second half goals from Nick Atkinson and Jacob Lee to claim the 2-0 win while posting their first clean sheet of the season.
It was another unfamiliar opponent for the Black Knights, taking on Florida Atlantic for the first time in program history. The Owls were on the front foot for the opening 10 minutes, but Army was able to settle in and enjoy themselves for the remainder of the first half, despite lacking the goal at halftime. The Black Knights best chance came in the 29th minute off a long throw, where D'Anthony Brown saw his rocket of a volley stopped by a strong left foot from the Owls keeper.
The Black Knights came out strong, scoring within the first minute of the second half after Nick Atkinson was fouled to set up a free kick. Eric Lusskin sat over the set piece, before delivering a perfect ball into the box that Atkinson got his head on first to give the Black Knights the lead. It marked Atkinson's second goal in as many games, both headers off a set piece.
Army would double its lead in the 73rd minute behind Jacob Lee's first collegiate goal. Cooper Warren found space on the right side of the box, allowing Lee to make his run towards net. Warren delivered a ball to the feet of Lee, who kept his composure to slot home a calculated finish to give Army some breathing room in a two-goal advantage. With the lead, the Black Knights refused to allow the Owls any quality looks on net, digging in defensively to secure the shutout victory.
Cadets Capsules- Nick Atkinson has scored in consecutive games, a feat last achieved by John Poncy last season (at American, vs. Holy Cross).
- Cooper Warren picked up his second assist of the season and fifth of career.
- Josh Taylor and Tomas Hut combined for the Black Knights first clean sheet of the season, each tabbing one save.
- Eric Lusskin recorded his first career assist on the goal from Lee.
"I'm really proud of the effort of the group tonight. FAU is a very strong team and will win a lot of games this season. It was nice to see us be solid in our box defending, take advantage of set pieces and get a great goal in transition. I was really happy with the leadership from our captains this week. We took a step forward tonight and are looking forward to compete together again on Saturday against Sacred Heart." - head coach Brian Plotkin.
