Ruta, Early Collect ABCA Rawlings Northeast All-Region Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball team had two players receive all-region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings this week, as both third baseman Sam Ruta and starting pitcher Connelly Early received spots.

Ruta, a First Team All-Patriot League honoree who was recently named to the Hattiesburg Regional All-Tournament Team, landed on the Northeast All-Region First Team while Early, the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, collected Second Team accolades.

This marks the third time in five seasons that the Black Knights have received two all-region selections. Â The duo of Jon Rosoff (First Team) and Daniel Burgraaf (Second Team) did so in 2018, while Anthony Giachin (First team) and Job Hurtubise (First Team) achieved the feat in 2019.

A returning Freshman All-American from the 2021 season, Ruta picked up right where he left off in his sophomore campaign. The infielder finished the year ranked 21st in the nation in on-base percentage (.493) and additionally checked in at 25th in batting average (.390). He paced the Cadets with four triples and was tied with Nick Manesis for the team lead in home runs with seven.

Early was dominant in his first year in the starting rotation and earned the Black Knights' Friday spot. The southpaw turned in an ERA of 3.26 through a team-high 85.2 innings on the bump and fanned 88 batters. He tossed one complete game and recorded a career-best nine punchouts in two separate outings.

As a First Team selection, Ruta will now be on the ballot for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The All-America Teams will be announced the morning of Friday, June 17 prior to the start of the 2022 NCAA Div. I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.
