Baseball Rolls Past LIU in Midweek Clash
May 03, 2022 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team downed LIU by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday night at Johnson Stadium to earn its 10th home win of the season.
Army (23-20, 15-6 PL) put up six unanswered runs in its defeat of the Sharks (27-14, 12-6 NEC) while tallying double-digit hits (11) for the 19th time this year. Derek Berg led the Cadets at the plate, hitting at a 2-for-4 clip to go along with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Ross Friedrick also had an impressive stat line, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
An additional highlight of the midweek win came from freshman Coleson Titus, who made his first career start. The rookie threw out two runners from behind the dish and cranked out a double for his first hit as a Black Knight.
Friedrick got his bat going early to provide a spark for the lineup and drove in Kevin Dubrule in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. The Sharks got off to a slower start, as starting pitcher Steven Graver faced just one over the minimum in the opening three frames.
LIU eventually got on the board in the top of the fourth by using a solo home run and a sac fly to take its first and only lead of the game at 2-1. Army responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of RBI singles from Berg and Braden Golinski that put the home team ahead, 3-2.
Once the Black Knights overtook their visitors in the fourth, they never looked back and went on to score an additional four runs between the sixth and seventh innings. A wild pitch, an RBI single from Dubrule and another RBI knock from Berg helped lift the Cadets to their final margin of victory at 7-2.
Following Graver's four-inning start, Army used three additional arms to keep the Sharks at bay in Mike Ruggieri, Teddy Lepcio and Robbie Buecker. Ruggieri (2-4), who was credited with the win, and Lepcio picked up a pair of strikeouts apiece.
What's Next
The Black Knights will continue their home stay with a 3 p.m. midweek game against Manhattan on Wednesday, May 4. Following the date with the Jaspers, Army will close out its regular season with a pair of Patriot League doubleheaders against Lehigh (Saturday, May 7) and Lafayette (Sunday, May 8). Both days are set for a 1 p.m. start, with Saturday's games scheduled to be preceded by a senior day ceremony.
