Coach's Corner
"We brought 12 athletes to the meet this year which is the second highest qualifier total for our program. The men compete on Wednesday and Friday and the women go on Thursday and Saturday. The top 12 finishers here advance to the NCAA final in Eugene (Oregon) in two weeks. Today was our busiest day of the four-day competition. We competed in hammer, javelin, pole vault, shot put, the 110 high hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles. The weather took a turn for the worse and storms rolled into the area forcing some adjustments to the schedule. And we did a nice job of managing the rain and wind.
The hammer guys didn't have any improvements today but I thought Deven (McNeal) closed out his career with a solid performance. He came to us as a raw undeveloped kid and developed into a very competitive hammer and weight thrower. In the javelin both guys struggled to match their seasonal bests. While they didn't have their best day both Chris (Barrett) and Parker (Brosius) put together a solid season. Ethan Hesson was our pole vaulter today and he had a nice clearance at the opening height but was unable to get the next bar. All in all, it was a great year for him. He performed at his best when it counted most and has a bright future. In the 110 high hurdles Justin Young had a seasonal best but ended up just short (25th) of advancing to the quarterfinal round. Jamir Gibson represented us in the shot put here and struggled to match his best form from earlier this year. Justin Young had the best performance of the day for us in the 400 intermediate hurdles. He has tremendous ability in that event and today he ran to his potential. His time of 51.24 was a new personal best and ranks as the second best mark ever at Army behind only Ivory Carson (51.00).
He qualified to the quarterfinal as the 16th best performer so he is certainly within striking distance of what it will take to advance. Justin never lacks for confidence in his ability and that in many respects fuels his competitive fire. I have never questioned his mindset so now it will just come down to whether or not he can execute when it counts." – Mike Smith
UP NEXT
The women portion of the championships begin on Thursday with Anna Tovkach (800m), Emily Mikoud (hammer throw), Abigail Green (hammer throw), Brooke Stratman (javelin), and Emily Fink (hammer throw, shot put), competing.
