Hogan Named Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
May 17, 2022 | Men's Track and Field
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Ryan Hogan has been named the 2022 Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year announced on Tuesday. Hogan is the ninth Black Knight and first since 2017 to win the award.
Hogan, a native of Denver, Colo., holds a 3.93 grade-point average as a computer science major. He has made the Dean's List each semester at West Point. A team captain, he is now a two-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree. Hogan branched Cyber and will be stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga.
He specializes in the 100m and 200m where he consistently finished near the top in both events. At the 2022 Patriot League Championships, Hogan won the gold medal in the 200m (21.83) and picked up a second-place medal as a member of the 4x100m relay team (41.69), and finished fourth in the 100m (11.16m).
Hogan is a four-time varsity letter winner, four-time Patriot League scorer, and four-time Army-Navy champion (200m twice and 4x100 twice). Hogan appears on the Army all-time top-10 list five times in four events – 100m, 4x100m relay (twice), indoor 200m, and outdoor 200m.
"At our end of the year award ceremony several weeks ago, I described Ryan Hogan as a young man who on the surface projects a quiet confidence but inside a competitive fire burns. That description illustrates Ryan Hogan the athlete. It is accurate, but this scholar-athlete of the year award reflects the other aspect of Ryan Hogan's excellence," said head coach Mike Smith. "He is a brilliant student. He is one of the top cadets in the order of merit and he is a scholar in the classroom. He is one of our team captains and possesses a quiet leadership style that inspires others through example. He will graduate from the preeminent leadership institution in the world on Saturday and eventually go on to his post at Fort Gordon, Georgia as a member of the cyber branch. He will excel as a cyber warrior in the same way that he has excelled on the track, with a relentless will to succeed. Ryan has quietly put together a great track and field career culminating with his Patriot League outdoor title in the 200 meters this spring. Our program has earned five of the six scholar-athlete of the year awards this spring and Ryan represents what all of our athletes aspire to achieve: excellence in every pillar at the academy. We are fortunate to have him on our team and proud that he is being recognized for his accomplishments in the classroom."
Voting for the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year and Academic All-League Teams are conducted by the League's outdoor track and field sports information directors.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in their sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their institution are not eligible for the honor.
