Army Rifle Head Coach Wright To Resign

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After 10 seasons being associated with the Army West Point rifle program, including serving seven seasons as head coach, Lt. Col. (retired) Web Wright III has announced he will step away from the program.
"We would like to thank Web Wright for his passion and dedication to the Army West Point rifle program for the last decade," said Director of Athletics Mike Buddie. "During his tenure, the program has produced All-Americans and has been in position to compete for championships. We wish Web, his wife Jen, and their family all the best."
Wright spent three seasons as the team's Officer Representative, which is an official institutional role that supports, mentors, and guides Cadet-Athletes throughout their 47-month experience at West Point.
Wright was named the program's 25th head coach on May 12, 2015. Throughout his tenure leading the program, the Black Knights made two NCAA team appearances, had eight NCAA individual qualifiers, and had 11 cadet-athletes earned All-America honors. The team also boasts eight victories in the last decade over service academy rival Navy.
"I would like to thank the Army West Point Athletics family for the best job ever and all of the support along the way," said Wright. "I am very proud to have influenced so many outstanding young men and women; they are truly America's best. I've loved every minute of coaching this team and building leaders of character through this sport, but it is time to move to the next chapter. I would like to thank all of the parents for everything they have done for the team, and I would like to thank all of the athletes and managers that have worked so hard and accomplished so much. And mostly I'd like to thank my family for allowing me to invest time and energy into the team and the sport I love."
As an athlete, Wright amassed an impressive list of accolades including competing at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Wright was a seven-time All-American and was a two-time NCAA Smallbore champion while helping West Virginia to three national titles.
Wright, who competed with the US Army Marksmanship Unit from 1991 until 1996, served at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels throughout his career in the Army. He served two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and one deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the famed 10th Mountain Division.
Assistant coach Leighton Dempster will serve as the interim head coach while Army West Point conducts a national search for the next head coach.
