Bats Stay Hot, Baseball Downs Hartford on the Road
April 13, 2022 | Baseball
HARTFORD, Conn. – Scoring double-digit runs for the fourth time in eight games, the Army West Point baseball team cruised to an 11-6 win over Hartford on Wednesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
Once again, the Black Knights' (15-16, 8-3 PL) offense was paced by Kevin Dubrule, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, one home run and two runs scored. Ross Friedrick also highlighted the bats, finishing the night 3-for-4 with three RBI as well.
Mike Ruggieri had a solid night on the mound, fanning a career-high eight batters through his 5.0 inning start. The sophomore scattered four hits and issued just two walks before finishing his outing with three earned runs.
The first half of the game was controlled by the Cadets, as they scored six unanswered runs between the second and fourth innings. Friedrick and Cam Cerruto got the push started with back-to-back home runs in the top of the second before a three-spot in the third and an additional run scored on a Hawk (4-22, 3-9 America East) error in the fourth helped the team jump out early.
After being held to four scoreless frames by Ruggieri, Hartford got on the board in the bottom of the fifth by pushing the two leadoff runners on. Using back-to-back RBI singles to score, the home team cut the lead down to 6-2 before Ruggieri retired two batters on strikes and ended the inning.
Army responded to the push in the following frame when another error allowed Derek Berg, who walked and stole a base, to score. Dubrule then stepped up to the plate and blasted his first home run of the year out to left field, driving in both Macias and Meade to re-extend the lead to 10-2.
Hartford staged its final comeback in the bottom half of the inning, initially scoring when a leadoff triple resulted in an RBI groundout in the following at-bat. The Hawks went on to tally a three-run homer of their own that brought the score down to 10-6. Ruggieri was tagged with three of the runs, while reliever Steven Graver was responsible for one.
The Black Knights scored one last run in the top of the seventh to claim their final 11-6 triumph, as Berg came in on a wild pitch. The pitching staff, which also saw Teddy Lepcio and Tanner Gresham make appearances, held the home team to zeros down the stretch, allowing Army to pick up its fourth midweek win of the year.
