Women’s Tennis Defeats Hawaii Pacific
March 06, 2022 | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Army West Point women's tennis team picked up its seventh-straight victory on Sunday afternoon after besting Hawaii Pacific, 4-2, in Honolulu.
The Black Knights (13-4) set the winning tone early in their first-ever match against the Sharks (5-2), who advanced to the quarterfinal of last season's NCAA Division II Championship, by securing the doubles point. MaryJo Pidgeon and Anna Loureiro teamed up for a 6-2 victory at the third singles flight before the tandem of Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans brought home the early advantage with a 7-6 tiebreaker win.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Sharks were able to tie things up at the start of singles play when Shaline Pipa posted a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2) at the top spot in the lineup.
After a strong performance in doubles, Herremans carried the momentum into singles play, where she made quick work of her opponent at the sixth spot and posted a 6-0, 6-3 win to regain the Cadets' lead at 2-1.
Once again, Hawaii Pacific responded to the push and knotted the score up at 2-2 after taking the fourth singles court. It was, however, the closest that the Sharks got as Cooper Jackson and Carolyn Ahn posted back-to-back wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, to boost Army to victory.
What's Next
Army will continue its spring break trip with matches against Long Beach State and the University of Hawaii. The Black Knights are set to take on the 49ers on Monday, March 7 at 3 p.m. on the campus of the Rainbow Warriors before facing their hosts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.
