Patriot League Names Melampy Pitcher of the Week
March 29, 2022 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After tossing the team's first complete game shutout since the 2018 campaign, Army West Point Baseball junior Patrick Melampy collected Pitcher of the Week honors from the Patriot League in an announcement put out on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The right-hander, who is the first Cadet arm to receive a weekly accolade from the conference this year, was dominant on the mound during the first game of a doubleheader at Navy. Melampy went the distance in the seven-inning contest, facing just one over the minimum and scattering a pair of hits while tallying two punchouts. He issued zero walks and retired 11-straight batters to close out the 7-0 victory over the Midshipmen.
Â
Following Melampy's historic outing, the team went on to shut out Navy in game two as the tandem of Brian Dawson and Tanner Gresham helped the Black Knights pick up a 9-0 result. The shutouts mark Army's 10th and 11th respectively in its 121-year history with Navy. Prior to Sunday's results, the Cadets had never shut out their service academy rivals twice in one season.
Â
Sophomore infielder Sam Ruta also highlighted the weekly Patriot League awards, as he received an honorable mention. During the games against the Mids, he batted a staggering .571 (4-for-7) while notching a team-best four RBI. Ruta additionally scored two runs, recorded two extra-base hits (one double, one home run) and stole a base to bring his total count to eight.
