Wrestling Finishes Season at NCAA Championship
March 18, 2022 | Wrestling
DETROIT, Mich. – The Army West Point wrestling team's 2021-22 season came to a close on Friday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena, as the road ended for all four of its NCAA Championship wrestlers.
For the fourth-consecutive year, the Black Knights were represented by at least four competitors at the tournament, three of whom advanced to the second day of competition.
No. 24 P.J. Ogunsanya made the longest run for the Cadets, extending his stay at the championship through the third round of consolation bouts. The senior opened up the day with a thrilling upset over No. 8 Heil (Campbell), which saw him get a pin at the 6:56 mark for the team's only bonus point victory of the tournament. The captain's season was then ended when riding time pushed No. 18 Artalona past the two-time NCAA qualifier with a 2-1 decision.
In addition to Ogunsanya, both No. 23 Markus Hartman and No. 28 Ben Pasiuk also represented the Black Knights in the third session at Little Caesars Arena. Pasiuk narrowly missed out on the chance to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket, as a last-minute takedown sealed his fate opposite No. 22 Kauffman of Northern Illinois (3-2 decision). Hartman also suffered a heartbreaking loss, dropping a 9-1 major decision at the hands of Iowa's ninth-seeded Kaleb Young, who entered this year's tournament as a three-time All-American.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the aforementioned trio, Army leaves the NCAA Championship with four points, the sixth-most of any other program in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association as of Friday afternoon. Final team standings will remain subject to change, based on the remainder of the matches.

Coach's Corner
"Our performances this weekend prove that our program continues to rise and continues to compete at higher levels every season. There is some disappointment in how the tournament ended, but I am just so grateful to have the opportunity to have a front row seat to our guys' careers. Very proud of how they represented West Point and our wrestling program." - Head Coach Kevin Ward
