March 16, 2022 | Hockey
WINTHROP, Mass. – The three 2022 Hobey Baker nominees – Colin Bilek, Gavin Abric, and Anthony Firriolo – were named to 2021-22 All-Atlantic Hockey Teams announced on Wednesday. Senior forward Colin Bilek was named to the first team, while sophomore goalie Gavin Abric and junior defenseman Anthony Firriolo were tabbed to the second team.
One of the best all-around skaters in the conference, Bilek led the conference in points with 31 at the end of the regular season as well as contributing to a top-20 penalty kill in the country. A constant scoring threat, he led the Black Knights in goals with 11, in assists with a career-high 20, and points with 31; his 145 shots were second in the league. He finished with three multi-goal games, including a hat-trick against Yale on November 12. Bilek and teammate Daniel Haider are tied for the most hat-tricks in the league. Bilek, a two-time team captain, was tabbed as the 2021-22 Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Player of the Year. Bilek was named the AHA Player of the Month in November after a seven-point month where he scored four times and recorded two assists in five games to lead the team in points and goals. The Brighton, Mich. native was named AHA Player of the Week on November 15 and February 21. He is second on the active career points and goals lists and third on the assists list in Atlantic Hockey.
After not playing a game last season, Abric assumed the starting role early in the season and never looked back. Abric led the league and was fourth in the nation in shutouts with four while also ranking second in AHA in save percentage (.925). The Hayward, Wisc. native finished the regular season with a 13-12-4 record. Abric, a two-time AHA Goalie of the Week recipient, made a career-high 46 saves in the defeat to Air Force in the first game of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament Quarterfinals series. Abric was named AHA Goalie of the Month and the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) National Goaltender of the Month for October after posting two wins and one shutout while making 198 saves on 208 shots for a percentage of .952. His save percentage was good for best in the conference and fourth highest in the NCAA. The GAA of 1.67 was also best in the conference and 11th in the nation. Abric is one of 10 semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the nation's top goaltender.
Firriolo has established himself as one of the most versatile players in Atlantic Hockey - and the country - at his position. The Montville, N.J. native was the Black Knights' second-leading scorer on the season with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. Firriolo has also proved to be an effective defenseman for Coach Brian Riley's group, spending more than 25 minutes on the ice per game. His TOI is second to only Thomas Farrell, his defensive partner. The blueliner has recorded 54 blocked shots which are the third-most on the team and was a key contributor on an Army penalty kill unit that ranked second in the league and 20th in the nation. A two-time AHA Defensive Player of the Week, he was named AHA Player of the Week for the first time of his career on October 25 after a two-goal game against AIC.
