Davis Named a Finalist for Nissen-Emery Award

WEST POINT, NY -- Â Mathew Davis, of Army West Point Gymnastics, was selected as one of eight finalists for the 2022 Nissen-Emery Award, on Thursday, as announced by the College Gymnastics Association.
Since 1966, college gymnastics' highest honor, referred to as the "Heisman Trophy" of gymnastics, is awarded to the year's most outstanding senior collegiate gymnast. Announced annually at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, the award highlights gymnastics excellence, good sportsmanship, and a high standard of scholarship.
Davis has had a strong career at with Army. In his freshman season, Davis was named the 2019 ECAC Rookie of the Year and was an NCAA all-around qualifier. His career only propelled from there as he was named a CGA All-American after his incredible sophomore season, becoming the first Black Knight to earn the honor since 2005. During his junior season he qualified for the NCAA Championship in the all-around and was nominated for the CGA MVP Award.
The Frisco, Texas native has had a stellar senior season thus far, placing sixth on floor and 20th in the all-around at the 2022 Winter Cup Finals. Over the course of his career, Davis has accumulated three of Army's five top scores on the floor exercise with a personal best and program record of 14.400 at the 2019 ECAC Championships.
Davis is the fifth Black Knight to be named a finalist for the award, with the last being Jesse Glenn who won the award in 2016.Â
