COACH'S CORNER
"In 2020, Marshall Beatty entered the Patriot League Indoor championship meet as the favorite in the 5k. He finished back in the pack at that meet and the disappointment he felt afterward was clearly written on his face. Since that time he has not lost a Patriot League race. He has won back-to-back cross country titles and was the double champion outdoors last spring in the 5k and the 10k. Today, he atoned for the mistakes he made back in 2020 by winning the 5000m in one of the most dominating performances of his career. Our guys had a plan for how the race needed to develop for us to score well and we executed it exactly as we drew it up. Matt Porter set the early tempo and strung the field along for 2 miles and then Marshall Beatty drove it home with a relentless attack over the last mile that broke everyone. The guys have gotten good at disciplined racing and today it paid off with 3 in the top 5. They did a nice job of competing. We didn't have any other champions today but we did a good job of qualifying for tomorrow's finals. We advanced nearly everyone that we thought we could advance. The 60, the hurdles, the 200,400,800 and mile are all events we need to do well in and we got almost all of the guys through to the finals. In the field today we scored well in the vault with all three of our guys and the guys in the weight throw did a nice job of getting the points we needed to get. We were a little short in some areas but we made up some ground in others. That is how it goes at championship meets. Ultimately though the team that limits its mistakes is the one that will take home the trophy. If we take care of business tomorrow we will score pretty well." – Mike Smith
