Women’s Soccer Bows Out on Penalty Kicks in Patriot League Championship

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point women's soccer battled Bucknell to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes, before falling on penalty kicks in the Patriot League Championship at Malek Stadium.
The two sides failed to get anything going in the first half, with just one attempt on target between them coming from Bucknell's Abbey Gearhart in the third minute. The Army backline of Lindsey Smith, Keira Vesy, Emma Richey and Jordan Follenweider each locked in for 110 minutes to limit the Bison attack.
In the second half, the game opened up with Army putting the pressure on through Brigid Duffy and Lauren Drysdale. Duffy saw a pair of shots saved as Army traded a pair of corners with Bison in the first ten minutes. Jenna Hall made a brilliant save to come out and stop an attempt from Duffy who was surging on goal.
Sage Strohman stood strong in the Army net, with seven saves coming after the first half to keep Bucknell scoreless. Lindsey Smith and Cami Silvestro each saw shots stray wide in the closing minutes of regulation, as extra time was needed to decide the contest.
Army came close in the 95th minute, with Duffy and Izzy Fontana seeing shots saved after a scramble in the Bucknell box. Teresa Deda tested Strohman again in net multiple times in the added time, with the Army All-league goalie allowing the game to reach penalty kicks.
Lauren Drysdale tucked home her penalty kick to give Army a 1-0 lead through two rounds after a fine save from Strohman. However, the Bison would connect on its next three penalties to win the Patriot League Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
