Chao, Richey Highlight Black Knights in Patriot League Postseason Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Army West Point women's soccer team regular season Patriot League Championship was highlighted by numerous Patriot League Postseason Awards announced by the league on Friday. Head Coach Tracy Chao won Coach of the Year after leading the Black Knights to their first regular-season title since 2010 . Senior defender co-captain Emma Richey was named Defensive Player of the Year. Seniors Lauren Drysdale and Richey were name First Team All-Patriot League, while senior Dara Murray, sophomore Kaelan Bradley, junior Lindsey Smith, and sophomore Sage Strohman were named Second Team All-Patriot League.
Coach of the Year
In her third season overall and her second full season as head coach, Chao is the third Army women's soccer coach to win the award and the first since 2010 (Steph Golan) won the award. The Black Knights, who were picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll, exceeded expectations on their way to claiming their fifth regular-season title, and their first since 2010. Army finished with an 8-4-6 overall record and a 6-1-2 Patriot League record. Army had a seven-game unbeaten run from September 8 to October 7 and finished its home regular-season schedule with a 7-0-1 record.
Defensive Player of the Year
Senior Emma Richey is the fourth cadet-athlete to be named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, the last being Mia Padon who won the award in the 2020-2021 season. Entering the 2022 season, Emma was named Patriot League Pre-Season Defensive Player.
In the 2022 season, Richey has been a strong force on the backend of the pitch. Emma has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Richey started in all 18 games this season and as logged 1,515 minutes of action. Defensively, Army has kept opponents to 198 shots. She scored her first career goal this season which proved to be the game-winning goal against Fairleigh Dickinson.
First Team All-Patriot League
Four-year starter, Lauren Drysdale has been a force offensively since the beginning of the season. In the contest against American University, Lauren scored the game-winning goal pushing the Black Knights past the Eagles in a 1-0 victory.
Entering the 2022 season Drysdale was voted on Patriot League Preseason All-League team. Lauren is the First Captain of the Corps of Cadets for the 2022-23 academic year which is the highest position in the cadet chain of command. Lauren is a co-team captain. On the field, Lauren has accumulated 29 points – 10 goals and 9 assists – while starting in all 62 games patrolling the midfield.
Second team All-Patriot League
Forward Dara Murray had an accomplished 2022 season. In the contest against Wagner, Murray scored her first career hat-trick as well as the first Black Knight to score a hat-trick in twenty years. This season Dara was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. This season, the three-year starter scored four goals, had three assists, and recorded 11 points.
Kaelan Bradley has been a force on the field for the Black Knights. This season, Bradley earned 10 points, four assists, and three goals. Two of her goals this season have been game-winning goals. In the contest against Holy Cross and Boston University, Bradley scored with seconds left in the game, one of which helped Army finish first in the conference and winning the regular season title for the first time since 2010. This season Bradley has three goals, four assists, and has earned 10 points.
Junior Lindsey Smith has been an asset on the back end of the pitch. This season the Black Knights defense has held their opponents to 15 goals. Smith has recorded 1,197 minutes of game time. This season, she has started in all 18 games and has one assist, a 0.286 shot on goal percentage, and one point.
Goalkeeper Sage Strohman has dominated the penalty box. In the Patriot League, Strohman is third in the league in goals against average, saves, sixth for saves per game, and fourth in shutouts per game. This season Sage has 15 goals allowed, a GAA of 0.875, 57 saves, a save percentage of 0.792, and six shutouts. She has a record of 7-4-6 and was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.
The number one seed Black Knights are preparing to face the lowest remaining seed in semifinals at Malek Stadium on Thursday, November 3 at 6 p.m.
