October 28, 2022 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point hockey (0-5-1, 0-3-0 AHA) suffered an 8-2 defeat to American International College (5-2-2, 3-1-0 AHA) on Friday night at Tate Rink. Â
Anthony Firriolo picked up a pair of assists for the Cadets, while Lucas Kanta registered his first Army goal in the third period.Â
AIC came out and tested Gavin Abric in goal early, with the junior netminder making seven saves within the first six minutes of the contest. AIC was able to maintain the pressure and get on the board at the 6:18 mark of the first period, with Matt Rickard putting the puck in the back of the net right on the goal line after a Blake Bennett shot trickled through the pads of Abric after a save. Â
Bennett would get on the board with a goal at the 13:35 mark, bringing the score to 2-0 through the first period as Army would successfully killed off a penalty at the end of the period. Getting a power play early in the second period, Army would capitalize right away on the man advantage. After Anthony Firriolo found Max Itagaki at his familiar spot on the right circle, Itagaki slipped a pass over to John Keranen who fired home with a one-time finish, his second tally of the season.Â
The one-goal game would not last long, with AIC scoring on the power play at the 2:06 mark through Jordan Biro. After another AIC goal made the score 4-1, Army would head to a five-minute power play with a 5-on-3 opportunity but were unable to capitalize at a pivotal point of the game late in the second period.Â
After Army killed off an early power play in the third period, AIC extended the lead with 13:30 remaining in the game, before adding number six less than a minute later. The goals would continue to pour in, with Lucas Kanta redirecting a Jude Brower shot in front of net, giving Kanta his first Army goal and making the score 6-2 at the 7:46 mark. AIC added a pair of goals with just over eight minutes remaining, once again less than a minute apart, to bring the final score to 8-2.Â
