Ogunsanya, Wrestling Take Top Honors at F&M Open
January 07, 2022 | Wrestling
LANCASTER, Penn. – Strong performances across the board, highlighted by a title at 149 lbs. from P.J. Ogunsanya, boosted the Army West Point wrestling team to a first-place finish at the F&M Open on Friday afternoon.
The team accumulated 165 total points to lead the field, with additional key scoring from Mark Montgomery (133 lbs.), Markus Hartman (157 lbs.) and Sahm Abdulrazzaq (184 lbs.), who added a trio of second-place finishes.
Consistency was the key for Ogunsanya, who opened the action with a decision over an Air Force Falcon to advance to the Round of 16. The captain then went on to major an opponent from Columbia, 13-5, and earned a win by forfeit and another decision to advance to the championship bout. Pitted against Virginia's Jarod Verkleeren, he used a 4-3 decision to claim his second tournament title this year as he captured his weight class at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in November.
Hartman, who built a strong foundation for himself in the first half of his senior campaign, had one of the strongest outings of the day as he pinned two opponents and majored another. Both Montgomery and Abdulrazzaq added bonus point victories via major decision in their respective battles for silver.
Of the 29 Black Knights that competed, 10 placed within the top six. Second-place Air Force had six Falcons place, while third-place Virginia completed the day with four ranked finishers. Throughout the day, the Cadets racked up 13 major decisions, 13 falls and three technical falls.
Complete results from Army are listed below, with consolation play italicized.
Coach's Corner
"Overall, this was a solid day for us. We accomplished a lot of things we set out to do today. Our guys competed hard, pushed the pace, and executed pretty well. We still need to build on our willingness to win some tough battles, though. We maybe showed a little too much respect to our opponents in some matches and we need to impose our will more. But it was a good day. Ogunsanya and Hartman really led the way. It was good seeing Pasiuk and Montgomery back on the mat. We can build from this and press on. Excited for Pitt on Sunday." – Head Coach Kevin Ward
Cadet's Corner
"I enjoyed competing alongside my brothers at the tournament. [Finishing second was] not an ideal way to finish the tournament, but I trust that our high-level wrestling staff will help me adjust and improve." – Sahm Abdulrazzaq
