Deck, Hartman Secure Wins, Army Defeated by No. 11 Cornell
January 15, 2022 | Wrestling
ITHACA, N.Y. – At the end of a hard-fought battle against No. 11 Cornell, an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association foe, the Army West Point wrestling team suffered a 28-10 loss on Saturday afternoon.
Though the Black Knights (0-6, 0-1 EIWA) were able to tie their season-high in duel points thanks to a pair of bonus point wins from Thomas Deck and No. 28 Markus Hartman, the team fell in its league-opener opposite the Big Red (4-2, 1-0 EIWA).
Army was never able to overtake the home team for the lead, but came as close as just a one-point deficit three bouts into the action. After the Big Red secured a 7-0 score with wins at 125 and 133 lbs., Deck's (141 lbs.) fifth pin of his sophomore campaign cut the edge down to 7-6.
While Cornell re-distanced itself from the visitors with a forfeit win at 149 lbs., Hartman was able to bring the Cadets within striking distance once again. The team captain posted a 13-0 major decision to minimize the Big Red's lead to 13-10 while earning his fifth bonus point victory of the year.
The three-point deficit was the closest the team got down the stretch, as Cornell held on for the win. Though the home squad's wrestlers emerged triumphantly from the final five bouts, the Black Knights made them work for it and limited each result to a decision. Both No. 25 J.T. Brown (197 lbs.) and Brandon Phillips (HWT) had chances to push Army past its 10-point score in the final two bouts by taking their competitors into overtime, but came away empty.
Despite the loss, Army was able to limit the Big Red to margins of victory of just three points or less in five different battles while competing against their fifth top-25 opponent of the year.
Complete results from the match are listed below.
Coach's Corner
"I thought in nine of 10 matches today we took steps forward as individuals and that helps move the team forward. We went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country and some results just didn't go our way. We can live with that. Our effort was there, our fight was there, and we looked like we believed we belonged. I like the progress I saw today and look forward to keeping that progress going." – Head Coach Kevin Ward
Cadets' Corner
"Came out strong and aggressive, felt good to collect some bonus points and get some momentum rolling for the team. Team is looking tough, even though the scoreboard didn't reflect it, we were very close in a lot of matches. If a couple of those matches went a little differently , we would have come out on top. Proud of my brothers." – Markus Hartman
"I felt pretty good about my performance. As one of the lighter weights it's important to put on a show and get the team rolling. I'm grateful for the opportunity to compete with my brothers. We wrestled hard and I can't wait to see what we're going to do in March." – Thomas Deck
