January 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON, Mass. --- Army West Point Women's Basketball dropped its midweek road contest to Boston University, 64-56, on Wednesday night at Case Arena.
Kate Murray led the offense for Army, recording her second game with 20-plus points this season. The firstie went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc for the Black Knights. Kamryn Hall followed with 12 points, shooting 54 percent from the floor. Sam McNaughton dished out a game-high seven assists for Army and contributed six points.
How It Happened
Both teams had trouble finding their offensive groove in the first quarter as the first basket of the game was not recorded until the 8:30 mark when Boston took a 2-0 lead. McNaugton then followed with a turn-around jump shot to even things out. At the first media timeout, the teams were tied at 4-4, each shooting below 30 percent from the floor. The Black Knights hit foul trouble with less than three minutes left in the period, giving the Terriers chances at the charity stripe. With 1:25 on the clock, Hope Brown helped change the momentum of the game by drawing a charge. Army finished the quarter with a 11-9 lead over Boston.
Army opened the second quarter with strong defense, forcing Boston into a shot clock violation. Boston took a two-point lead at 13-11 over Army before Sabria Hunter broke the silence with Army's first points of the period at 6:11. The rest of the quarter was back-and-forth, ending in the Terriers' favor, 22-21.
Murray opened the third with a three-pointer and Brown followed with a three-pointer of her own a possession later to take a 27-22 lead over Boston. With 7:59 on the clock, the Terriers hit a three that kicked off a 12-2 scoring run. Army fought back with help from Murray who hit another trey, but second chance points allowed Boston to keep its lead over Army heading into the fourth quarter (44-38).
Army had trouble with Boston's offense in the opening minutes of the quarter, allowing the Terriers to go on a 6-0 scoring run. Brown scored the Black Knights' first basket off a driving layup to cut the Terriers' lead to 53-40. Hall helped Army dig out of the hole with a steal and a bucket. She followed with another layup on the next possession to put her at 12 points. Brown chipped in a corner three to cut Boston's lead to nine points with 1:15 on the clock and Lauren Lithgow contributed two more points, but it wasn't enough as the Terriers pulled away with the 64-56 win.
Coach's Corner
"We are still chasing consistency. I thought our first half defensive was exceptional, but we struggled to score against a talented BU squad. The second half we moved the ball better and executed but their (Boston) size caused problems in the low post. I thought we gave up too many second chances points in critical moments. We are at our best when we are winning the rebounding war, sharing the ball, and playing fast. There's better to be had for Army Women's Basketball and we will find it." - head coach Missy Traversi
