WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point men's rugby returned to the pitch at Warrior Field on Saturday to earn a 48-28 win over Queen's University of Charlotte. The Black Knights outworked the Royals on both ends of the field to earn their first victory of the 2021 15s season.
How It Happened
Army came out of the locker room ready to run, and run is what they did, as it took the Cadets only two minutes to find the try zone and take the lead. Jonny Haley scored the first try of the season for Army, which was followed by a successful conversion by Sean McNulty to give the Black Knights a 7-0 lead that they would not surrender. Lucas Pattinson followed up with a try score of his own to give Army a 12-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game.
Michael Amberg was the star of the pitch in the season opener, scoring fifteen total points on three tries to lead the Cadets in scoring. The junior scored back-to-back tries in the 24th and 36th minute to stretch the lead to 26-7 going into the break.
Queen's rallied early in the second half to shrink the Army lead to five (26-21) at the 50 minute mark. With Army needing a score to keep the lead, senior captain Matt Meehan drove his team down the field and into the end zone for a huge score. McNulty followed suit, booting another conversion between the pipes to push the Army lead back to 33-21.
After a quick answer from the Royals, Army put together a 15-0 run to close out the contest and secure the victory for Army.
McNulty began the run with a penalty kick score, which was followed by Amberg's third try of the day. Nolan Green capped off the try-scoring with a phenomenal run, breaking through the Queen's backline and flying down the field for his first score of the season. Scharl du Toit kicked a successful conversion to finish the Army scoring run.
Cadet's Corner
"It was a fantastic day on the whole. For many of these guys it was the first time playing at home and for the rest it was the first time playing in over a year. It was a great game to start the season and it showed us what we have to work on. We are excited to start climbing and continue to get better." - Michael Amberg
"We knew today was a big day. Being bac on Warrior Field with the team is such a great feeling and brings a lot of energy and emotion. The guys went out there today with the intent to win and we did just that. Everyone contributed to the win and I was proud to be able to play with the brothers again." - Nolan Green
