WEST POINT, N.Y. - In the second game of its three-game homestand, the Army West Point men's soccer team put on an offensive showcase, featuring five goals from four Cadets in a 5-0 win over the Siena Saints.
Even though he plays as a backline defender, D'Anthony Brown shined on offense tonight, scoring two goals to lift the Cadets to their third win of the season. He and Oscar Pereira lead the Black Knight's offense that fired off a total of 18 shots in the contest, nine of which ended up on goal.
How it Happened
In typical fashion, Army came out of the gates with energy quickly moving the ball up the field into Saints territory. Pereira took the first shot for the Cadets just four minutes into the game. Two more shots from D'Anthony Brown and Atef Sikazwe missed the mark before Brown was able to put one past the keeper to break the scoreless tie.
Brown, a defender, made a terrific run from the backline and collected the ball in space off a pass from Cooper Warren to get the Cadets on the board.
Just eight minutes later, it was John Poncy who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Pereira was able to work around a few Saint defenders before finding Poncy who was able to collect the ball, turn and find the bottom left corner for the second goal of the night.
The Black Knights carried the 2-0 lead into the locker room at the half thanks to a save from their goalkeeper, Jos Taylor at the 40 minute mark. Taylor was replaced by freshman Tomas Hut coming out of the locker room, but still was credited with the win.
Army did not take their foots off the gas pedal in the second half, as it continued to out work Siena in the attacking zone, creating 11 shots in the process. Freshman Brandon Bryant scored his second goal of the season off a flick pass from Sean Lee in the 55th minute and Pereira scored his fourth goal of the season just five minutes later.
The action did not stop there, as D'Anthony Brown once again was able to split the Siena defense, find the ball off a deflection from Drew Clement, and score his second goal of the night.
Tomas Hut recorded two saves after entering at the half to lift Army to the 5-0 shutout win.
Coach's Corner
"General Miller spoke to the team yesterday and talked about the importance of habits and the group is doing a very good job of taking care of all the details day to day. Them doing that is allowing them to have the energy and desire each time they step on the field to improve and compete." said Coach Brian Plotkin. "Credit to the entire group for their effort and energy tonight. They did a great job and put together a very good performance. It was another learning experience and we will continue to work towards reaching our potential."
Cadet's Corner
"It was a great game by the team, we really got after it today. We came in and immediately put pressure on the other team and once we got the first goal one lead to another. It was a collective effort and everything was really well done by all the boys tonight." - D'Anthony Brown
"It was a really solid performance all the way around. We played well in the front and played well in the and then capitalized on the moments when we needed to." - John Poncy
"Our team is playing so well right now and I feel like I'm scoring because of them. It doesn't feel like I'm doing much because they're out here working with me." - Oscar Pereira
