WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite a valiant effort from the defensive back line, Army West Point men's soccer dropped a close decision to the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 1-0, on Monday night. The Army back line fought until the very last whistle, but were unable to find the back of the net to even the score before the clock hit 90:00.
The Black Knights came out and set the tone early, controlling the pace throughout the first 15 minutes. Just seven minutes into the match, Jake Burgess was able to dance around a defender and throw a shot on goal which missed just wide.
In the 18th minute, Army's Bradley Schweickert was given a red card , which forced Army to play a man down for the rest of the contest. Even playing at a disadvantage, the Cadets were able to put together a number of scoring chances throughout the match. Centered around Colman Kim, Oscar Pereira and Cooper Warren pushed the tempo, leading the Army attack on a few runs late in the first half before the break.
The last eight minutes of action was all Army, as it continually worked the ball deep into the FDU zone, firing off two shots while attempting four corner kicks.
Army fell to 1-1-0 on the season with the result.
Coach's Corner
"I'm very proud of the team. The effort and commitment they played with was excellent. Set pieces are key in close games and credit to Farleigh Dickinson for finding the goal that got them the result." said head coach Brian Plotkin. "I loved how we continued to push after we went down a goal and I am excited about what this group can develop into. We are looking forward to a great week of training and prepare for Longwood this weekend."
Inside the Box Score
- Josh Taylor anchored the defensive effort for the Black Knights, recording three saves on the night.
- Jake Burgess and Cooper Warren each fired off two shots to lead the team.
- The defensive group of D'Anthony Brown, Luke Doyle, Nick Atkinson and Dylan Mitchiner all turned in impressive performances in slowing down a formidable FDU attack after the Schweickert red card ejection.
