Men's Rugby Announces Award Winners and Captains at Team Banquet

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army Men's rugby gathered this past weekend to cap off it's season with a banquet and awards ceremony. The Black Knights had another stellar season in 2020-21, finishing with a 7-1 overall record including a sweep of the service academies. In 15s play, Army coasted to a 4-0 record while outscoring opponents 201-32. The 7s season was highlighted by a third-place finish at the Collegiate Rugby Championships, and a 3-1 overall record.
As a part of the ceremony, Coach Sherman announced his captains for the 2021-22 season. Rising senior Nolan Green will serve as the head captain while Matt Meehan and Larry Williams will serve as his vice captains.
Black Knights' Head Coach Matt Sherman also announced six team award winners at the ceremony.
Rookie of the Year: Tiaan Mosconi ('24)
Mosconi earned the honor after a tremendous performance at the Collegiate Rugby Championships, where he scored 24 points and was the team's leading conversion scorer. The California native successfully kicked seven conversions while adding a pair of tries to the stat sheet.
Most Improved Player: Matt De Frates ('24)
De Frates earned playing time in 15s action, successfully kicking conversions in two matches against Norwich and Air Force. De Frates played valuable minutes at the fly-half position for Army in his first season.
Best Back: Nolan Green ('22)
Green earned the best back award after a dominant outing at the Collegiate Rugby Championships. Green was the Army leading scorer with 30 points in the four-day tournament. His best performance came in a 12-10 come-from-behind win over Davenport int thr third-place game, where Green scored both tries late in the game to lift the Cadets to victory. The junior wing also contributed 12 points in 15s action.
Best Forward: Parker Ross ('21)
After leading the team in scoring during 15s play, Ross was awarded the team's best forward honor. Ross found the end-zone in three different contests, totaling 20 points on the season. The senior captain played as the team's starting prop on the 15s field.
MVP: Robert Barrett ('21)
The team's starting No. 8, Barrett contributed to the team's success in a number of different ways. On the score sheet, the Tennessee native chipped in 10 points. After not starting a game prior to 2020, Barrett improved dramatically over the course of the season to become one of the most dangerous players on the field for the Black Knights.
Brother's Brother: Chris Berger ('21)
Berger was the recipient of the team's Brothers' Brother Award, which recognizes the player who each year demonstrates the highest ideals and values of the Army Men's Rugby program and USMA culture including honor, academics, leadership, support, devotion, promotion of team cohesion and team play that significantly enhances program success.
