Manesis, Baseball Take Down Fordham in Extras
May 05, 2021 | Baseball
The Black Knights' (22-18) offense was boosted by Nick Manesis, who finished his outing 2-for-4 with two RBI and a team-best four runs scored. Ross Friedrick also chipped in double-digit hits, adding a pair of singles.
Manesis got Army's scoring started in the first inning, cranking out a two-run homer and handing his team the lead. His team-best fifth home run of the year awarded the Black Knights a 2-0 edge.
Following a scoreless opening frame, Fordham responded in the bottom of the second and used an RBI triple and an RBI groundout to even the score. Over the next two innings, the Rams put up an additional two runs to take their first lead of the matchup at 4-2.
The Black Knights answered the push in their half of the sixth after putting up four-consecutive zeros. Both Anthony Giachin and Jeremiah Adams were driven in to tie things up once again at 4-4. The score did not remain knotted up for long, as the Rams' Maeker launched a three-run bomb in the bottom of the frame, putting Fordham back on top, 7-4.
A combined four unanswered runs were scored by the Black Knights in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing the Black Knights to earn a narrow, 8-7 advantage. Tim Simoes, Andre Walden and Adams all picked up RBI during the spree. The Rams then used their final chance in the bottom of the ninth to level out the score at eight runs apiece, forcing the game into extras.
The momentum of the 10th inning was all Army, as the team racked up three runs to take its final 11-8 lead. Giachin plated the go-ahead runner with an RBI double, while Adams and Walden pushed across insurance runs with a squeeze and a bases-loaded walk, respectively.
A combined 11 arms were used by both teams, with the Black Knights utilizing five. Tanner Gresham was ultimately awarded the win, pushing him to 4-0 on the season. He retired the side in the final inning to boost Army to its fifth midweek win of the year.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Black Knights will close out their regular-season conference slate with a four-game series against Navy at Palisades Credit Union in Pomona, N.Y. Prior to the start of Sunday's games, head coach Jim Foster and his staff will honor the team's 10-member senior class.
