Baseball Finishes Off Series Split with Lafayette

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team split the final two games of a four-game series vs. Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
The Black Knights (17-16, 11-7 Patriot League) fell in game one, 4-2, before taking the final game of the four-game series, 6-4. Overall, the Black Knights and the Leopards (11-14, 10-12 Patriot League) split the four-game series.
In the seven-inning game one, the Black Knights went down 3-0 in the third inning, but battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off a Sam Ruta RBI single and a Blake Ledoux sac fly to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
However, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning by Lafayette's Ciuffreda made it a 4-2 ballgame and the Black Knights were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
Ruta led the way with two hits on the day, adding one RBI while Blake Ledoux also had one.
Starter Patrick Melampy took the loss, going 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Ray Bartoli tossed the final five frames, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
In game two, the Black Knights wasted no time getting on the board, tallying one run in the first on a Ruta RBI and a second as they two advantage of a throwing error in the second inning.
Lafayette answered back with four runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
Ross Friedrick blasted a home run in the fourth inning, kicking off a four-run inning as the Black Knights took a 6-4 lead.
The Leopards added one in the ninth and were knocking on the door with two in scoring position with two out, but Harry Flannery was able to get a pop up to third to end the threat, getting his first save of the year.
Reliever Connley Early, who entered in the fourth and tossed 5.2 innings of one-hit, one-run baseball with three walks and six strikeouts earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Black Knights are back in action this Tuesday, April 27 at Bryant University at 3 p.m. ET.
