Army's Season Comes to an End in Patriot League Quarterfinal
March 07, 2021 | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON – The Army West Point women's basketball team's season came to a close Sunday afternoon at Bender Arena. The Black Knights fell to American in the Patriot League quarterfinal by a score of 76-56.
This marked the final contest of Army Head Coach Dave Magarity's career. The program's all-time wins leader, he compiled a record of 266-183 in his 15 seasons at the helm. Army earned four postseason berths under the direction of Magarity with a pair of trips to both the NCAA tournament and WNIT.
It was also the final game for seniors Liz Layne and Jessica Rawls. Layne will be stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Rawls will be stationed in Germany. Both branched ordnance, which was each of their top choices.
"They are two wonderful young ladies. They were great captains for us. They were great leaders," Magarity said about the senior duo. "They just set a tremendous example for us in the locker room on a daily basis. Just two of the nicest people that I've been around in my career. I know they're both going to go on to have tremendously successful careers as officers in the Army and we all wish them the very best."
Sabria Hunter led Army with 17 points on 5-12 shooting from the floor and was 7-8 from the line. Taylor Sullivan also scored in double-figures, finishing with 12 points. American had four members score in double digits led by Emily Fisher, who poured in a game-high 19 points on 7-10 shooting from the field.
The Eagles used an 11-0 run in the first to push ahead 13-6 by the three-minute mark of the first quarter. Natalie Stralkus pushed the ball ahead to Rawls who connected on a fast-break layup to end the run.
American, however, outscored the Black Knights 22-7 in the second quarter to go into the locker room with a 35-15 team.
Army went on to shoot 60 percent from the field and 57 percent from 3-point range in the second half. Though, American shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from deep.
"You have to give our team credit. We kept trying -- we kept battling. We just could never close that gap and obviously that's how the game ended," Magarity said.
