March 20, 2021 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. --Â The Army West Point men's and women's track and field teams had a combined total of 19 event wins in their meet against Monmouth Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Â
"I am really pleased with how things went today," Army head coach Mike Smith said. "I don't want to minimize the significance of our performances because there were some outstanding marks, but the real win today was simply getting a chance to run, jump and throw in a competition. Our athletes were in their element. The weather was ideal and our people competed with some real energy. It was a great atmosphere."

The Army women had 12 event wins and had a trio of multi-event winners. Morgan Chewning-Kulick placed first in both the 1500m and the 800m. Abigail Green won the discus and hammer throw. Hannah Blakely won the 400m hurdles and was the first leg of the 4x400m relay.

COACH MIKE SMITH'S THOUGHTS
"We had the best javelin day in the history of the Army program. Brooke Stratman threw the number two all-time mark in program history and this is her first collegiate track meet. I did not see that coming at all, but some people have an additional gear when it comes to competition and I think that Brooke is wired that way. Today's performance was 21 feet farther than her high school best. It was great to see. On the men's side we had great marks from all three of our javelin guys. Parker Brosious and Chris Barrett had all-time best marks and I think Chris may have punched his ticket to the NCAA regional meet. But the most dominant performance today came from August Cook. He has not thrown a javelin in competition since 2019, and he came out here today and threw a new school record breaking his own mark from 2019. He is likely to be near the top of the NCAA list after today. He has aspirations to compete at the highest levels of our sport and has trained at a level that is consistent with those goals. This is just the beginning of his season, so I think we have a lot to look forward to with him. It was an impressive day for that entire group of athletes. The hammer throw was the other school record that was broken today. Abigail Green is one of our most consistent performers and today's opener is a good indicator of what she might do this spring.
Â
"On the track, we had quite a few wins and some marks that are very strong for season openers. Jazmine Alderman did a nice job indoors but I think she is more in her element on the outdoor oval and her competitive wins in the 100 and 200 were a reflection of that. Our middle distance men and women were competing for wins in the 800 and 1500 and I was happy with how they attacked the races.
Â
"In the end this meet was great for both of our teams and now we have something from which to build going forward."
UP NEXT
Army will compete in the UConn Spring Invite next weekend in Storrs, Conn. The men's portion of the invitational will take place on Friday and women's portion will be on Saturday.
