COACH'S CORNER
"Today, in what is normally a rust buster type of meet for us we saw some of the best all-time performances in the history of our program. The meet attracted quite a few more entries than we have seen in the past and I think that helped improve the competitive level across the board. And we have to consider that our people have not had a competitively balanced indoor meet since 2020 so this was an important day for our team. It was pretty high energy from morning until evening. Two marks, in particular, rose to the level of historical significance today and both were on the women's side. Saydee Aganus equaled her program record in the 60m hurdle final. I thought she looked very good in the prelim and she came back in the final and ran even better. It helped to have Brianna White right there with her. Those two were stride-for-stride through three hurdles and then Saydee inched ahead over hurdles 4 and 5. The other mark that jumped out at me was the weight throw performance by Emily Mikoud. She has continued to get stronger and technically better all fall and today we saw the results of that hard work. She has been one of our most valuable performers over the last few years and today's performance is just one more indication of how good she is.
While the program records always stand out there were also some nice performances today in all of our event areas. In the jumps, I thought both groups of vaulters put up some good results. Ethan Hull looked as good as he ever has today. He was running well and was getting off the ground better than he has in the past. In the women's vault, Sam was consistent and had a great series and Clara did a nice job of making corrections in her first collegiate meet.
In the shot put Emily Fink threw farther than any Army woman ever not named Emily Mikoud. She was a glider in high school but is such an exceptional athlete that she was able to learn the rotational technique pretty quickly and it made a big difference today. Her mark was an improvement of over 6 feet from her high school best set last spring. It was a remarkable series considering how young she is. Jamir Gibson was as good as he has ever been in both the weight and the shot. Our throwers have been so good in recent years and Jamir has played a large role in our success. He won both events today and it is pretty clear that he is in great shape and will be one of the best guys in our region in both events this winter.
On the oval, we had some great marks from some of our most dependable people. On the men's side, Kevin Sembrat has been one of our most consistent long sprinters since he arrived here and today he looked great in the 400 and even better on the relay. He is a great competitor. Justin Young, Jon Redmond, and Ryan Hogan were all pretty good in a variety of roles today. We will depend heavily on those guys this year so it was encouraging to see them all competing at a high level here in December.
Anna Tovkach had a nice opener today in the 500 and won going away. Emma Taylor won the 400 in a very competitive race. She got out well and then held off her teammates down the final straight. I like her energy and fight and expect that she will do some special things for us this year. She also looked great on the relay. Jazmine Alderman had a strong day in the short sprints. She will be asked to do a lot of things for us so it was encouraging to see her healthy and competing at a high level this early.
All in all, I saw some things today that are pretty encouraging. We still have some work to do but if we can stay healthy we have a chance to be pretty good on both sides this winter." – Mike Smith
