Men's Soccer Claims Three All-Patriot League Team Spots
November 05, 2021 | Men's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Army West Point men's soccer placed three of it's Cadet-Athletes on All-Patriot League teams after the memorable 2021 season. Firsties Oscar Pereira, Jacob Suppiah and John Poncy landed on the All-Patriot League First, Second and Third teams, respectively, as voted by the conference's coaches and sports information directors. The Black Knights' three placements are the most for the program since the 2018 season.
Oscar Pereira earned his second All-League Team nomination after his Second Team nod a year ago. The All-Patriot Leqgue First teamer led the team in points (18) and assists (6) while ending the year tied for the team lead with six goals. That mark was also good for fourth most in the Patriot League. The Hastings-on-Hudson native now has 13 career goals and 37 career points. His season was highlighted by a three-game point streak in non-conference play. The Black Knights benefited from Pereira's strong play this season, posting a 6-1-1 record in games that he recorded a point.
Army senior captain, Jacob Suppiah, earned the first All-League placement of his career, landing on the second team, after serving as the team's primary goalkeeper for the season. "Supe" led the Black Knights to five victories this season, saving 42 shots across 12 games played. The senior also posted three clean sheets on the year, a mark that was good for T-5 in the Patriot League. Suppiah saved five-plus shots in four games this season to power the Black Knights to it's 7-7-2 record.
Rounding out the Army honors, John Poncy was voted to the All-Patriot League third team after a six-goal season. The senior forward came on strong in the 2021 season to boost an Army attack that outscored opponents 30-23. Poncy's six-goal mark was tied for most on the team and fourth most in the Patriot League. The McLean, Va. native showed up in crunch time for Army, as he posted late game-tying goals vs.Seton Hall and at Lehigh while also scoring the eventual game-winner vs. Holy Cross. Poncy also sparked the Black Knight rally in the season finale at Lafayette, with a 79th minute strike to power a two-goal comeback effort and force a tie that put Army in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2018.
Army has concluded it's regular season schedule and is now preparing for the Patriot League Tournament and its quarterfinal round matchup with three-seeded Holy Cross. The game is slated to kick off at 6 PM this Saturday, Nov. 6 in Worcester, Mass. That game can be streamed on ESPN+.
