WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point Athletics Association's Academic Support team has announced its Corps Squad Athletes for the month of September, tabbing men's soccer player Jacob Suppiah and sprint football player David Dickerson.Â
The duo is the first to be recognized for the 2021-22 academic year. Each month, the Academic Support team will announce the honorees.
David Dickerson - Senior - Linebacker - Austin, Texas
CDT William (David) Dickerson is a four-year member of the Army West Point Sprint Football Team and a starting linebacker. In recognition of his dedication and commitment to excellence, both on and off the field, CDT Dickerson was elected by his teammates as a defensive captain for the 2021 Sprint football season. As an example of his leadership qualities, he and his fellow co-captains develop themes each week that the team rallies around. For the week's Navy game (Oct. 2), the theme was "Together". CDT Dickerson addressed the team at the weekly team meeting and spoke about the brotherhood that exists among his teammates. He emphasized the importance of sticking together through the adversity the team will face at some point during the game. His words were spoken like a true leader, and everyone in the room respected what he had to say. What's even better is that CDT Dickerson will live out his words every day and set a great example for his teammates to follow.
CDT Dickerson consistently demonstrates excellence across all three pillars. In addition to his 4.049 academic GPA as an engineering management major, he maintains a 3.944 in the physical pillar and a 3.742 military cumulative score. He has received numerous accolades in recognition of his achievements as an extremely well-rounded future leader. He has made the Dean's List every semester and has earned the Distinguished Cadet Award every year that he has been eligible (2019, 2020, 2021). He was awarded the Superintendent's Award for Excellence (Wreath and Star) for 2020 and 2021.
Â
Mark West, Head Sprint Football Coach: "David is hands-down one of the best football players I have ever coached. His ability to defend against the run game, yet also defend in space versus the passing game is second-to-none. He was an All-League Honorable Mention performer in 2019 and I expect him to earn First Team All-League honors this year as a senior. More importantly, David is a team captain and an outstanding leader. He has extremely high expectations for himself, and he also holds others accountable. He is vocal when he needs to be but prefers to let his actions do his talking. He leads the defense with confidence and compassion, always setting the example in all he does. My vision for the team is to be the model athletic program for the Academy. David is the model cadet-athlete. Overall, David is one of the most well-rounded cadet-athletes in the Corps and is very deserving of this award."   Â
Jacob Suppiah - Senior - Goalkeeper - Memphis, Tenn.  Â
Cadet Jacob Suppiah, member of Company F3, is an exemplary leader both on and off the soccer field. In the classroom, Suppiah excels. With a 3.964 CQPA as a space science major and nuclear science minor, Suppiah has been on the Dean's List every semester at the Academy since his plebe year and achieved over a 4.000 TQPA in both 2020-1 and 2020-2. Additionally, Suppiah has received Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every season, as well as Academic All-Patriot League Honors in 2019.In addition to his academic pursuits, Suppiah is a leader within the Corps as the 2BN, 3REG XO this semester.
Suppiah is the starting goalkeeper and captain for the Army men's soccer team in its 4-2-1 start to the 2021 season. Suppiah brings energy, dedication, and leadership to all his endeavors. He is a team player who brings out the best in those around him through example and support. He is a great cadet, soccer player, and student and is incredibly deserving of this recognition.
Â
Company F3's Training, Advising and Counseling Officer (TAC): "CDT Suppiah is the 2BN, 3REG XO (second battalion, third regiment executive officer) this semester. In this position, he commands a staff of nine peer Cadets. I used the word 'command' deliberately here because there is an air of authority that Jacob brings to the role which others automatically follow, without coercion. His presence and attention to detail predicate a well-oiled machine that tends to be one step ahead of his supported D, E, and F companies. He is calm under pressure and owns any oversights, proposing immediate plans to overcome and accomplish the mission. Jacob's future is as bright as the sun on a cloudless day. He's ready now to lead Soldiers as a Platoon Leader."
Brian Plotkin, Head Men's Soccer Coach: "Jacob has been a key component to our positive start to the season. As our senior goalkeeper he has helped establish and push higher the standards that we expect from ourselves in training as well as in the classroom and in company. His growth continues both on the field and in leadership as we prepare to enter into the Patriot League regular season play. His impact will resonate and push us towards our goals."
