BALTIMORE, Md. – In it's penultimate match of the 2021 regular season, the Army West Point men's soccer team fell in overtime to Loyola Maryland, 1-0. The Black Knights battled until the very end, but were unable to upend the now Patriot League leading Greyhounds.
Senior goaltender, Jacob Suppiah, held off the Loyola attack with five saves in the first 90 minutes of action. Loyola scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to get the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights managed to do exactly that from the early going, as they did not allow Loyola to take a shot until the 26th minute and did not let a shot reach the net for the entire first half.
Army was able to create a few chances on the offensive end as Oscar Pereira and Drew Clement both put shots on goal. Loyola would save both shots as the teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Loyola picked it up offensively in the second half, putting pressure on the Army back line from the first touch. The Greyhounds offense put five shots on goal in the first 22 minutes of the half, all of which were saved by senior goaltender Jacob Suppiah.
Army would hold off Loyola, who fired off 12 second half shots, for the remainder of regulation, as the game would stay scoreless until the 90-minute whistle blew.
The Black Knights nearly got the game winner in the 89th minute, when John Poncy got a head on a cross from D'Anthony Brown. The Loyola keeper managed to keep the shot in front of him, making the save and forcing overtime.
Loyola got the golden goal in the third minute of the first overtime to earn the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jacob Suppiah made five saves in the contest, his second highest total of the season
- Oscar Pereira, Drew Clement and John Poncy put shots on goal for the Black Knights
- The backline of Luke Doyle, D'Anthony Brown, Jack Eaton and Nick Atkinson played all 93 minutes of action
COACH PLOTKIN'S QUOTE
"Loyola is a very talented team. I thought we did a good job of limiting their chances in the box and many of their shots were from outside the 18. In the end, we talk about the details of not letting balls bounce and getting the first touch on crosses and we didn't do that on the final play. The forward looking view is we have everything to play for Wednesday against Lafayette. We will get home tonight, recover and be ready." - Coach Brian Plotkin
UP NEXT
Army will close out its regular season on Wednesday when it travels West to play a match against Lafayette. First kick is slated for 7 PM in Easton, Pa.
