WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite a strong showing in the second half, the Army West Point women's soccer team came out on the losing side of a 2-1 battle with Boston University in its regular season finale on Wednesday evening at Malek Stadium.
Though the team was unable to topple the Terriers, other results from around the conference helped the Black Knights secure the last available spot in the 2021 Patriot League Championship. No. 6 Army will travel to Loyola Maryland to take on the third-seeded Greyhounds on Sunday, Oct. 31 in a 2 p.m. game.
Boston University was quick to strike and recorded its first goal within the first two minutes of the game. A free kick and a mis-cleared ball allowed the Terriers to get on the board first with a 1-0 lead.
After the early attack, the visitors continued to apply pressure to Army's back line. Though Strohman was able to make a save on another one of the Terriers' early attempts, BU added to its lead in the 19th minute with a ball that was fed into the back post.
From there, the Black Knights were able to regain some of the momentum and began to keep the ball in Boston University's half of the field. Army had a handful of set pieces, thanks to a few free and corner kicks, but the team's offense was unable to get anything going. Ultimately, the Terriers took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second half of the game told an entirely different story for the Cadets, who were able to come together to create some high-pressure moments for BU.
The team had a few good chances to score coming out of the trip to the locker room, highlighted by a free kick ball from Elizabeth Oberhaus that nearly curled in past the goalkeeper. On the other side of the field, the Terriers were also able to create some scoring chances but Sage Strohman made some great saves to keep them at bay.
After being held scoreless for over two-thirds of the match, Army was finally able to end the shutout when Lauren Drysdale scored her second goal of the season in the 67th minute of action. The junior collected a ball from co-captain Dani Mendoza, crossed up her defender and fired a ball into the top left corner of the net to trim the Terriers' lead down to 2-1.
Less than five minutes after Drysdale's strike, Jasmine Talley was close to scoring the equalizer when Grace Edvalds flicked the ball to her, but BU's keeper denied the shot.
Each team had a few additional chances down the stretch and Strohman made some highlight-reel saves to keep the Cadets in it, but ultimately Boston University was able to hold on to its 2-1 margin of victory.
Coach's Corner
"Tonight's game was a tale of two halves. I think we gave BU a free 45 minutes [in the first half] and they took advantage. We stepped out of halftime and it was an entirely different game. Regardless, we reached one goal which was getting into the [Patriot League] tournament. Now, it's time to reload and recharge and shift our focus to the next portion of our schedule." – Tracy Chao, Head Coach
Cadets' Corner
"I thought we had a disappointing start with regards to everything we've worked on. It took 45 minutes to get things going, but I think we stepped it up in the second half and played a lot better. A lot closer to our potential. We have to build on that half going into our quarterfinal game." – Lauren Drysdale
"I think the first half was a little all over the place and frantic. Once we were able to come together at half time, we composed ourselves. We settled into the game. We definitely dominated the second half. It was just unfortunate that we couldn't get the win." – Keira Vesy
